Had you attacked all 4 groups you likely would have been able to hurt a good portion of his wizards. Had you used 88 you would have kept all of your wizards and lost some/all of your troops while at the same time likely killing a good portion of his wizards. As a wizard kingdom, do you honestly care that you lost troops?
One of my weaknesses as a game player is that I can never just "play the rules". So no, it never feels right for me to sacrifice troops. I can hear their screams when I go to sleep at night
I thought about bailing out completely and could have extricated 5 wizards doing so. But I didn't know about the phantoms-affecting-status-for-attack "feature" so I certainly didn't have that in my plans. I thought I was only dealing with one group that could impact the battle while I had two and (probably) a stronger military. The whole point of the attack into R9 was to have some excitement. Teleporting my wizards back home would have been lame. And I did learn something. A whole lot of something. And because it's been discussed publicly, maybe others learned without having to do it the hard way.
As a final note on the topic, it might help to add a note to the spell description that casting this spell allows the group to attack and be attacked as if it had real brigades.
