Good game all, and congratulations to the Lycan for the win!

This was my first (multiplayer) game of Alamaze since the First Cycle of Steel back in the late 80's (!). I was the Witchlord in Game ~41 or so. Despite the considerable amount of rust I built up in the ridiculous number of intervening years, I got the Gnomes into control of Mythgar reasonably quickly in this game. The Lycan looked to be engaged with the Alchemist to the west, and the Tyrant with the Sacred Order to the east, so when the Pirates to my north failed to consolidate Pellinor quickly (concentrating on Stormgate?), I decided to move in.

I had a good cadre of wizards but had under-recruited. Regardless, with good wizard support I did reasonably well muscling in against the Pirate until the Giant showed up, but between the two of them they forced me back (mostly) into Mythgar.

My first critical mistake came when the Giant showed up to Emerald Meadow. I was counting on sniping at his 1st Army Group with my smaller groups, hitting him with wizards and making him run through a wall of fire, and then making a quick retreat, hoping to bleed him enough he couldn't take the city. I had an army and patrol with 6 mid-level wizards between them, and I planned on having the patrol create phantoms to facilitate the same wall of fire / retreat trick. I knew he had a warlord and I'd read the Giant overview, but apparently not closely enough! Instead of a phantom screen and quick fade into the underbrush, STOMP and my phantom patrol was gone. My secondary army, set up for a similar tactic with real troops -- STOMP, gone. I did some damage, but not nearly enough against his prime troops.

My second critical mistake came as I'd also intercepted the First Giant with my First Gnome that turn, setting myself up for the same (literally) crushing defeat on the next. What I missed was that I probably could have dispelled with my lower-level wizards and landed a stun to suppress the warlord. I don't believe he had two warlords at that point, so that would have invalidated the stomp attack and allowed me to retreat to fight another day. Instead I resigned myself to losing the group and just went for as much damage as I could muster. STOMP and all my troops and wizards were Giant toejam, and the Gnome regime was mortally wounded.

As is well known, however, the two (im)moral pillars of Gnomish society are Avarice and Spite. I still had pop centers, influence, agents, and plenty of gold, so I shifted my plans to make Mythgar and Pellinor as close to Vietnam for the other kingdoms as I could make them. As civilians crawled into their underground holes to stew and brood until fortunes turned, I sent agents on assassination missions, sniped pop centers in the rear areas with my emissaries, recruited three new adepts and leveled them to 4 so I could harass with Cold Darkness, cast Imp Familar, and scoot around invisibly, and generally tried to make myself as much of a nuisance to the Giant (and later, the Lycan and Tyrant) as I could manage before they eradicated me. By the end I'd lost my capital, all agents, and all but one emissary, but assassinated at least two Giant warlords (maybe 3?), a Giant Lord Commander, a Giant Power-4 wizard, a Lycan Prince, and assorted lesser emissaries.

I played a lot of PBM games back in the day, but Alamaze was always my favorite. I'm happy to have the chance to play again and see the improvements that have been made!

Congratulations to Dwarf/Chris for Lions share victory on turn 40. This was my fifth game of the modern version. I did play 5-6 games om paper by mail back in the 1990s. Started well in this one until I tangled with Giant, Dwarf and Forgotten One. They hammered me down. At around turn 32 I had lost my capital not once but three times and was back at original capital with no other PCs. At that point just hoping to survive until turn 40. I had a regent, and two emissaries, about 45 brigades of pretty experienced troops, three power 9 wizards and a power five. 12 brigades were flyers, so I put the three power 9 wizards with the flyers and sent them out for some revenge. Nice to be able to fly to towns in the water. A new experience for me.
My Dad taught me to play chess when I was about 10, he said "You won't get any better beating up on your little brother. You only get better when you play against people who know more than you do"
I've managed to finish all five of my games and even win fourth game as Druid. It was a full diplomacy game and I ended up teamed up with two other players and we steamrolled over everyone. I didn't feel very good about that victory but I guess with full diplomacy, others could have done the same. I will perhaps avoid full diplomacy in the future.

Game 6061 ended on turn 40, the results:

1 DA Ozymandius 77,894 107,208
2 NE Cinkasnor 40,879 65,555
3 NO Milo007 18,421 36,944
4 SO Alz 17,300 31,060

While I won as the DA, it felt pretty hollow as this game had a lot of drops, even in the late game.

DE was close to winning (four regions), and the NO and others pushed him back, and then the DE dropped (leaving Triumvia empty for quite a while). The IL had some monster groups, full p-9 wizards across the board, and one turn just dropped out of nowhere. The UN similarly dropped late and, to my knowledge, was not attacked. So it was the four of us remaining. The NE was clearly more powerful. I was fortunate in that I moved a turn or two sooner.

My game was:

Turns 1 - 4: get region
Turn 5 - 12: Withstand RD attack; he dropped
Turn 13 - 25: Fight the TY (lots of good battles on both sides)
Turn 12 - 40: Grab territory

Game 6057 has completed, resulting in a rare victory for the Faerie Folk!

Final results:

1 FF Ozymandius 60,137 100,908
2 PI JohnnyUtah 47,377 77,781
3 NO CosmicWizard17 43,184 69,173
4 IL Holding For Player 35,043 58,959
5 DK Meilichios 35,488 56,848
6 LI Xerro 25,476 54,777

As the FF, I also set a new Alamaze record with 37 prisoners!

Most of them seemed to be from the poor LI. I got fortunate with my attacks and even did some "blind" kidnapping, where I didn't have intel, but I guessed correctly based on past results.

If the game had gone to turn 50, I feel the DK may have won. He had groups I couldn't touch and mostly tried to stay away from. That being said, I didn't really know what was going on in the south with the PI.

IL dropped what seemed to be a viable position on turn 38; no idea what happened there.

Anyhow, good game to all who participated!

Anonymous game ends with a Ranger win via Lion's Share on Turn 40. Congratulations to Ozymandius!!

I entered this one, my 1st Anon game, as the 12th player. Krynn was the location (in my limited experience I see that it's the last area fairly often) and I figured I'd try the PI as there were 2 possible seas to play in and I hadn't had any navy to speak of in the other couple games I was in. The Nomad in Zamora quickly blocked my presence in The Sorrows on Turn 3 when he took my secondary town on the coast and I found out that Krynn had nothing down that way. I didn't find the SA, who was in The crown Islands, town in my region until Turn 4 or 5 and his 2nd army was still there. I had to move my main army there to take it and he still didn't retreat, so I attacked it for a couple turns and knocked it down to a couple small brigades. Didn't expect him to collect some companions and begin plundering my villages. Up to this point in my limited experience I had no idea that you could even plunder a PC. It's possible that he also did the same to the RA (and eventual winner) player in Triumvia as RA declared war on SA at about that time. Meanwhile NO and whoever was in The Sword Coast were fighting and other scraps were happening in the Eastern half of the map. I wasn't too concerned with the East half of the map as it soon became a 3 way battle between myself as the PI trading PCs with SA and RA in Region 1. RA dropped out after several turns as someone, not sure who anymore, attacked his area in the East. By then NO had taken The Sword Coast and was battling FO in Zanthia. I eventually knocked out SA to take Region 1 and hung out for a bit building up armiess, mages, and emissaries. RA was fighting 2 or 3 players in the East so I didn't think it fair to go that way, so I attacked NO instead as he was still fighting FO but seemed to have things well in hand. My inexperience showed as I had no real plan and attacked all 3 of his regions at once. Took some PCs of course, but never came close to taking a region. NO countered with 3 big armies marching/teleporting into my heartland and nearly controlled the region when the game ended.

Once again: congratulations to both Ozymandius and Xerro for finishing Top 2 here.

This game was nuts. Every time I opened my turn, I had 7-8 battles on my PCs and a handful of enemy emissaries taking things. The only one who left me alone was the Tyrant, so thank you for that. And the Fairy Folk were mostly absent from my regions. But the other 4 kingdoms were all up in my business. Even at game end, there are 9 groups at my PCs. Anyway, I got to finish with 4 regions and 8 legendary castles, 25 prisoners (mostly princes), and I think I was in the lead pretty much from the beginning. The Nomad is a well balanced kingdom and was a lot of fun to play.
Congrats to all who played and finished.

I found this game interesting in that fortified PCs were actually difficult to take, even late in the game. Teleporting groups were still a thing, but were less common. In a typical game that goes the distance, there are no PCs (outside of the water) that are safe from a wizard group popping in and taking them. In this game, one had to be very deliberate to take some of the big PCs.
Thanks to all who played. I'd like to hear what others thought of this "low magic" game.

I have no idea what the GN did to get all those status points, but congrats to him.

I took this game over from Strong on turn 32 (33 being the first one I ran). He left me with a strong and well-rounded kingdom. He was engaged in fighting the WA, and so I picked that up. The WA was using invisible patrols + summons to take PCs, which is a difficult strategy to counter. Fortunately, I had just completed a game where I was fighting the IL using a similar strategy, and thus I could adapt the same counter-strategies I used in that game. I assassinated multiple P-6s and up and all, but one, was a wax figure - very frustrating! About the time I got a handle on the WA threat and wanted to move to attack the RD I got attacked by the NE. Before I knew it, it was turn 40 and the game was over.
2 AN Windstar 17,471 25,948
9 WA Cinkasnor 4,626 6,990

I usually look to play a balanced style - build up groups, raise and train wizards, improve production, acquire artifacts, and develop steadily across the board. For this game, I decided to throw that out the window. My strategy was simple: pure military, with everything else second. That meant recruiting one turn one and nearly every turn after that, either from PCs or companions.

I started in Triumvia, with my capital sitting close to Zanthia. That proximity gave me early intel, and what I saw surprised me: Zanthian PCs stubbornly remained human. Either the player dropped early or never engaged, so I moved in immediately. By turn 7 I had taken the region, and the LI picked off the city. Rather than risk an early conflict with him, I pivoted and marched north for the WA in the Crown Islands.

The WA player was clearly caught off guard; I secured regional control by turn 12. I never did take his capital, but I kept it under observation and made sure to denigrate him anytime he tried to enamor. I give him credit; he played the entire campaign and came close to taking some crucial PCs.

Staying true to my military-first doctrine, the next target was the Deathknights in Krynn. I had their PC list, but not much else; no recons, no sense of where his capital was or his troops. His holdings were split between the northern and southern halves of the region. I pushed through the north, meeting almost no resistance. My armies then began the long march south, only to find human PCs by the time they arrived. It looked like the DK had also been fighting the LI; that conflict may have contributed to his eventual drop.

I could have claimed Krynn, but holding four regions that early is an invitation for everyone on the map to dogpile you. Instead, I bypassed full conquest and advanced directly on my real target: the LI in the Sword Coast.

By this point the LI held Sword Coast and was expanding into Zamora. His military was well developed, and his wizards were stronger than mine. I was also concerned about his agents and spent considerable effort protecting my groups and warding any emissary he might have detected. Every one of my twenty-five orders was going into the Lizardman campaign - if anyone had attacked me anywhere else, I would’ve been in trouble.

Everything came down to the siege of the LI capital. We fought several decisive battles there. At first, I wasn’t sure how things would shake out given his wizard advantage, but my groups were simply larger and packed with elite brigades. He played the battles well, but in the end, raw military weight carried the day. Sometimes the answer really is “more troops!”

The LI dropped on what I believe was the final turn - unfortunate timing for him, as he missed out on his status points.

My kingdom at the end showed my strategy: seventeen elite brigades and another twenty-three veterans. Only two p-5s, the rest p-3s. My troops' cost was enormous, over 100k food and gold per turn. It was an effective strategy but also fragile; I did not have the tools to fight someone with multiple domes and regional spells.

Congratulations to everyone that finished it was a long trip. Congrats to Ozymandius for the Victory! This was my first game back after many years, I wanted to test mechanics and figure out the new meta. I thought I might finish as high as 2 but figured near the end I would be 4th ish. Wars blazed all around me and as the game got closer to the end...(I thought 40 was it), I prematurely attacked a big DK (Lord Thanatos) group in the mountains. I knew he would have a wall and also the HH but I wanted to see how a buffed Dwarf did. (It was bloody on both ends but manageable for both parties if not wasteful on my part. If I would have realized 50 was the end I would have planned a bit better and still probably been easily beaten LT if he remembers has a past with me both positive and negative he is a really good player. Dwarf was fun to play but the military seemed a bit underwhelming and really relied on having a Elite troop type early. I probably lost 8 princes lol but managed to make it to the end. Thanks to everyone.
