Watching the new Netflix on the Ottoman empire conquest of Constantinople. Has there ever been a better fortification than the Theodosian walls? It seems they lasted 1000 years, kept Europe free (of what?) etc.

I really think this would be a step above legendary castle. How amazing. 

Is there an example of a better military purchase in history?

P.S. Lars Brownwell podcast and book on this topic are great, too.
