New Slugfest 20 kingdom Game (Confluence)
#11
I think everyone would be good with Mike approving this, you telling us a slot and setup cost and then posting a time at which we can select regions. I am not sure honestly that one set of kingdoms is more favored than another in this format. I look at kingdoms I would enjoy playing and pick those over other kingdoms But at times I branch into other areas and sometimes those other areas involve me getting my butt kicked and others they involve me kicking butt. Personally I find diplomatic and team games more enjoyable than silent, while others enjoy the silent games.

Personally, I am not in favor of it. The veterans have tended to be very congenial to players who really want a particular kingdom or zone. I have yet to see it be an issue.

If certain zones always get chosen first and others chosen last, perhaps tweaking those kingdoms or zones to make them more or less competitive and desirable would be a better option.

Again, I think the balance is fine for a 12 player, 12 kingdom solo game.  And I like the Alliance format.  But the draft system resulted in almost a predetermined outcome, when combined with the strength of the players in the early selected teams.  I'd like to see top players take the less selected kingdoms.  My view is really more from the casual, learning player perspective, not who wants to be #1 in Valhalla.  I don't like when the least experienced team gets the last choice.

That said, I want to acknowledge the mentoring that our core players have done to bring in new players, and the success and enthusiasm of several of those newer players.  That is critical.  We need more of that.  We just have to acknowledge Alamaze may take years to be good at, and I think the newer, more casual players should get the top choices of kingdoms or alliances, not the leftovers.

The game software isn't in good shape to make a custom game like this right now. I had to manually configure and rearrange a bunch of coding options to make the first slugfest game possible so it's not automatic. The situation is that just about everything on the server is in the process of switching over to an entirely new system and I can't make any custom changes right now. The Choosing (and Duel) game formats are frozen until the next official release which is when I can create a new game type like this 20 kingdom slugfest variant.

I am fine with a player getting to pick a kingdom they would like the first 12 player game they play. Maybe even start a sign-up giving 1st game Players 24hrs to sign up. Then it is open to everyone.

But not at all good with everyone ranked below me picking first. For one I hardly ever play the same kingdom over and over unless I did badly or thought of something else I would like to try. Two I likely have less kingdoms that I have not played than those below me, so I am forced to not have a chance to even play them. Third I pay for this game we are not just sitting around the kitchen table.

Non metal players get a bonus that I have never gotten I am fine with this help them out and it does not effect me having the freedom to pick who I would like to play at that time. I rarely attack new players. If I am constantly being forced to not get a choice why should I go through this extra self limiting of how I play.

I understand, but all players want a choice, right?  So should the top player get the top pick, or the new player?  Assuming the goal is to grow the player base.  Wouldn't the top player accept picking last, unless it was always the same kingdom?

No body should be assured first pick. I have said before I would have no issue if all players signed up. Then they were randomly giving an order to pick there kingdom. No it is not fair to say play the same kingdom over and over. When this policy was put in 2nd cycle for a while I was basically choosing between the 5 same kingdom all of which I already played. it made the game more fun. I feel I do more than my share to try and keep players and train them but one thing I do like is the freedom to pick what I would like to play at the time. I would not choose the best kingdom over and over because it would be boring

I have to agree with JF. There was a period I played the same few kingdoms because JF and I picked last in our respective games based on rankings (there were several where all chose in reverse status point order).
I am ok with some games doing that, and with Chivalry and any other benefit to even things out (though I don't remember any of those things as I learned it).
But we have to have the same chance to try new kingdoms, to win or for fun or just to try a new kingdom. And picking last is not picking.

Somebody's always picking last.  So again, maybe a bonus either in status points or gold to the last couple selections, or inverse to Valhalla seems to be a thing.  I have a feeling if a player is picking near the end, they can get a kingdom they haven't played before, just assuming the popular kingdoms will already have been taken.

Again, with me it's more about a desire to play kingdoms I haven't before. Honestly, all of the kingdoms look equally fun to me - I don't have a favorite in this new cycle yet. I don't have a problem saying that the picking will start at such-and-such a time. I really don't want to be picking last all the time - honestly, I would think a new player would not mind picking towards the end as there are so many interesting ones to play and he'll still have a choice because he's got twice the options.

This is what I like about the anonymous drafting format, everyone drafts at the same time based on preferences so it's not first-come-first-serve, but you still always get one of your top 3 preferences
