It is important to understand that battles resolve in phases so there is:

Long Range Missile (where PC's are at highest effectiveness)
Short Range Missile
Magic
Charge
1st Melee
2nd Melee
Combined

So remember if your army is best in melee, you don't want to retreat early or your infantry won't even get involved.
