#140 – Investigate Encounter
#1
Seeking tips on the investigation of unusual sightings/encounters.

Should the Tactical Selection be Probing Attack, Standard Attack, or Determined Attack?

What should I have any wizards in the group investigating the attack do?

Is there an advantage or disadvantage to using a patrol to investigate encounters, versus using military groups with brigades of troops in them investigate encounters?

Perhaps most importantly, what should one not do, when investigating encounters?

Use the encounter aid to calculate your chances and try to get everything green.  I don't like to risk any wizards or  leaders higher than captain major.  If it's not green I don't go after it.
I like level two for all encounters.
Wizards should do guarded attack and if your wizard is too low to get guarded attack don't take him.  If you feel like living dangerously you can try mirror image but I have heard plenty of players cry about losing a level 3 or higher wizard when they tried something other than a guarded attack.
Wizards don't automatically show up with the encounter group.  They have to do a spell to be present.
I like to use patrols for encounters just because they are easy to move but groups with troops are fine too, especially if that is where your best leaders are.
Don't forget for Excellent and Superior encounters you need to cast a spell to enter, either bridge of mist or light of the evening star.  For something that hard you are better off to have a wizard high enough to have those spell as intrinsic, most kingdoms get them at level 3.
If you have an enigma always start with level 2.  You might get a wiz or combat leader and you will need room in the group for him.

If you don't use the player aid and get bad results I will definately be saying I told you so. Smile

How many characters should I send with a group to Investigate Encounter?

I sent 6, so by doing that, there's no way for me to gain any new characters from the encounter, if I win, right?

What is the reason why one is limited to just 3 military leaders and 3 wizards/adepts per military group? Just curious.

That’s the way the game mechanics were set up long long ago.

Patrols are better, more movement and the entire group gives no benefit. Unless your going to recruit companions from that space after it’s cleared of the encounter.

I usually send all the leaders from a group and hope for a couple of promotions. Send a wizard or two if high enough use the best spell mirror image or guarded attack to protect them.

I used the player aid, Dan.

That said, I risked it for the biscuit!
