Destroyed Groups Question
#1
Let's suppose you have a group that's certain to be destroyed, either via Chaos spell or due to being completely outmatched in force size and strength.

1) I assume the only way to preserve your wizards in such a group is to self-invisible them, yes?

2) In such a case, does the group just survive as a patrol?

3) And if so, do the captains/generals/marshals/warlords survive with them?

4) What about any group artifacts, would they stay with the patrol?

Thanks!

Followup questions here Smile

1) When you say that the group leaders don't survive when a group is destroyed (with a surviving wizard casting self-invisible or guarded attack), do the leaders go thru the normal chances of dying from combat or do they automatically die (0% survival rate) and only the wizards and artifacts remain?

2) Does the same calculation occur when an opposing wizard casts the death spell and destroys another group? In that, if all the troops are killed from the death spell, all leaders die and if no wizard remains in the group, all troops, leaders, and wizards are removed from the game? Also, does the other group casting the death spell inherit any artifacts as spoils of war?

3) Does the same calculation occur for regional spell effects, as when the 10% attrition from a demonic visions spell reduces the group to 100% attrition and the group is destroyed. What happens to the leaders and wizards in the excessive-attrition group that was destroyed by the regional spell? Do they all die along with the troops? Also, does the wizard's group casting the regional spell inherit any artifacts from the destroyed group as spoils of war?

Thanks for your help in understanding this....

Cipher, thanks for the answers. And those are interesting questions as well, unclemike, would be curious to know the answers.

Wizards with the instant teleport spell can get out before combat too.

Yes, but then they get teased for being sissies by all the other wizards.

The distinction here is Group destruction (group can't retreat and is destroyed) and troop destruction. Figures (wiz/ldrs) aren't 'troops' for this frame of reference.
Spells that destroy troops (via attirtion or brigade removal) don't impact the figures.
For direct answers to your questions:
1) As long as a group component (brigade, leader, wizard) exists in the group, the group should retain its artifacts.
2) That spell just impacts the brigades, not figures
3) As 2) above

Actually, question 1 was if the leaders/wizards automatically die or if they get the standard die roll for surival when all troops are lost.

This question is kinda important because there was confusion on whether a wizard should cast a guarded attack (or self invisible) spell in order to preserve the group's leaders if all troops were lost in battle.

If the leaders/wizards automatically die (0% survival rate) when all troops perish then the guarded attack or self invisible spell strictly benefits only the casting wizard. If the leaders/wizards get the standard die roll for survival then it becomes advantageous for at least one wizard in the group to cast guarded attack or self-invisible.

A wizard casting self inviso or guarded attack will only protect himself. Looking over those order/spell descriptions, there doesn't appear to be anything at all to suggest otherwise.

The Protect Heroes and Wizards spell only protects against Kill Leader/Wizards spells, it doesn't offer any benefit against combat related losses. The spell description doesn't explicitly state that, so maybe that is the source of confusion.

A GROUP destroyed (typically when it can't retreat) will have all of it's non-protected figures lost. There are artifacts that protect leaders in combat, but I do not think the artifacts will protect them from being lost with group destruction. It would seem cowardly to slink away under protection of the artifact while your comrades were eliminated, and I'm sure cowards don't become leaders in Alamaze.

Perhaps someone can offer comment on this part from experience.
