Off Topic Summer 2015 Heat
#1
I sent this recently to my best friend (I was his best man 30 years ago).  He is a guitarist that collects guitars.

Bill,

Heavy metal is for live audiences, so all live performances.  These are four of my top heavy metal songs.  Try to move to the whole screen button when watching.

I can’t believe this album is over 5 years old.  Just go with it.  Its visceral.  Not what you would call musical, but damn fine for any metal head.

This obviously isn’t the version I had back in college or Set Point, but it’s pretty good.  For years, I called this the greatest hard rock (I guess most call that metal) song.

This is really awesome stuff, live 1970 – about the time of the Jimmy Hendrix Experience, recorded for album back in 1967 or so.  Really as defining about metal as any Led Zep song.  Its not exactly, “She love you yah, yah, yah”.  N.I.B.

And this is my choice for AC/DC

So that makes four.  I can answer any questions if there is confusion.

That Sabbath show circa 1970 is pretty bad ass.

Ha. Something I actually understand. I've seen all four of those bands.... granted I didn't manage to catch the full original line-up of Black Sabbath and had to settle for the Bill Wardless version two years ago.... bah, Never saw Bon Scott live either.

1. I live in the Bay Area and grew up watching Metallica. Was at the first show up at the Stone in 83 with Cliff and Dave were still in the band. I've seen them a billion times... I always prefer the stuff off Lighting and Puppets... but your pick is a good example of the power they bring to the stage.

2. Can't quibble at all with this. I went looking. Found nothing I liked better.

3. Live Sabbath video is a rare thing. Ozzy never really had a great voice for live shows... I have always thought that Sabotage was the best greatest thing they ever did... and while it always feels like Sophie's choice when I do this, I think it would be in the running for my favorite metal album of all time.

4. If you haven't heard "AC/DC Live From Atlantic Studios" I think it offers far better sound quality and really gives me a feeling for Bon Scott. I was just in a discussion with a friend about what it would sound like if Bon Scott recorded the songs on Back in Black... "Let Me Put My Love Into You" comes immediately to mind as something he'd nail. Now I am sad.

Side note: Last weekend I had a chance to get up to Sacramento and see a small Metal Show. Bunch of Kids... looked like Black Sabbath's grandchildren... playing what they call "Doom Metal" these days. Dive club with great atmosphere and the young musicians carrying the torch. It totally gave me hope for the future.

Band I really dug was from Oregon called "Christian Mistress". Probably nothing live with any great audio... but there you go. The five of them were hitting the west coast crammed up in a banged up white van and loving every minute of it.
