I'm in hibernation mode during the holidays so only a few quick hints on playing the Demon Princes in 4th Cycle Maelstrom:
- With your demon princes, summon free skeleton brigades starting on turn 4. If you check your kingdom turn 0 setup, it shows that skeletons do NOT require food every turn and they are cheap in gold. Getting free troops is always good and you can have as many as 15 skeleton brigades in your group.
- Recruit damned companion troops in the wild. Not only are they cheap but more importantly, they can be converted into zombie brigades which grow on their own by eating the dead on the battlefield. I think you need a veteran brigade to recruit damned troops and since you picked Krynn (which doesn't provide a veteran brigade automatically), you may want to consider selecting the veteran brigade option with the kingdom customization order. That way, you won't have any problems recruiting damned troops into becoming zombies. Combining 15 skeleton brigades with 15 zombie brigades (30 total) fairly quickly will give your group a sizeable advantage that is very low cost in food and gold. You will be able to spend that gold on wizard development further strengthening your group.
- If you follow the above advice, also raise three wizards to at least 3rd level for presence. Three 3rd level wizards could cast wind storm (reduces alot of damage for pc battles), fear (for -15% reduction in pc/group rating), valor (+15% bonus to your 30 brigade undead force). You will be surprised how effective your group will be if you do this. When I played the demon princes in game 5247, I was able to save a lot of gold with the low maintenance cost of my skeleton/zombie force and raised my wizards to 5th level before the other kingdoms which gave me a significant advantage over them. Three 5th level wizards in your group is fairly strong just by themselves.
- Consider building a forge (new building type to construct) which allows you to equip your group with special arms and defenses for a whopping +25% bonus to both defense and combat rating. Equipped armor/weapons cannot be stolen from your group like artifacts so they remain secure.
- Since your kingdom starts off with a hidden and invisible capital which is hard to find, you don't have to select the glyph of protection with the kingdom customization order (though I usually do because it's one of my favorites) so choose what is appropriate for your kingdom's success.
- Of course, raise kingdom influence as high as possible which is important for strengthening your politicals. Also, raise emissaries to prince level to protect your special demon princes from being converted into a regent (occurs when you lose your king/queen).
- Have fun!
