So, this was the fourth game, and first win, for me in Maelstrom. Had a great time, thanks to all who participated!

Started in The Sword Coast as the Underworld, and tried to keep a low profile at the start, only getting involved in diplomatical means to stop the Warlocks from getting the major city in Zamora, in which I was successful. I was also lucky to start with my (secret) capital town in a water area, so pretty well secured and with the possibility to build a port there in the future.

At the time around T6 or so I was ready to get more involved in Zamora, which I could do with the knowledge that my other neighbors would probably be occupied with each other and not disturbing me; this since the Rangers of Krynn and Black Dragons of Zanthia were at each others throat, as did the Tyrants of Mythgar opposed to the Red Dragons of the Untamed lands, and finally the Amazons of Nyvaria fighting the Dark Elves of Pellinor. If it was because of the bad start or for other reasons I don't know, but the Warlocks didn't put up much resistance and by T12 I was able to secure Zamora with the Warlocks dropping the game, as did the Tyrants of Mythgar (badly battered by the Red Dragons I guess).

As I also had been so lucky as to stumble upon the Plow on T9 (and also a lot of other artifact goodies, The Sword Coast was really crawling with artifacts this game), I decided to bide my time and concentrating on building up. I was a bit worried about the Red Dragons since the Tyrants of Mythgar were beaten, but they got their hands full with the Amazons instead, fighting over control of Pellinor, with the Dark Elves also still fighting to keep control of their home region Pellinor.

I was able to build up my PCs and armies, training agents and wizards, as well as gathering even more artifacts and some random agent missions to try to disrupt other kingdoms - and things were really going all well at this point, until I on T16 (as a lot of you others as well I guess) started to get real worried about the Amazons, since they had been able to secure 3 regions, and I knew they were also strong in the battle for Pellinor. Especially since the Dark Elves also gave up at this point meaning Pellinor would be even easier to secure.

My plans at this point were to get involved east, so Mythgar, Pellinor and/or Stormgate were all potential targets, but the Amazon threat to victory made me speed up my plans and also set the first target for Stormwind, to which I sent a couple of Princes, both holding the Onyx Talisman. But it took a couple of turns to get them there, and at the same time I started moving my armies and other resources east, with the thought that getting (and then also keeping) Stormwind would make Pellinor the most feasable 4th region for me, by concentrating my resources in those neighboring regions, rather than Mythgar, Krynn or Zanthia. Since I was a little bit late to the party though, I think I have to thank the Red Dragons (and perhaps also the Elves?) for keeping the Amazons at bay those sweaty turns around 17-18. I think Pine Needle was fairly close to scoring the victory there...

T19 my two princes were able to turn Stormwind, and I also had fresh, big army divisions rolling in in Pellinor. My diplomatic corps was also quite good, and agents too of course, so were feeling quite comfortable at this point. Also relocated my capital to Stormwind, partly because I wanted to negate the possibility for others to take it by diplomatic means, and partly so I could get all my remaining agents, priestesses and emmies in range of Pellinor, fast. I knew it would be tricky with both the Amazon and Red Dragon precence in Pellinor, but since they had been fighting each other already for a long time, and also fighting in other regions, I relied on that they were so worn out that I still would have no bigger problem with them in Pellinor, especially since the Pirates also had started rumbling with the Amazons. The Elves however, seemed to have the same thought, and in the end my fight for Pellinor ended up being mostly opposed the Elves of Triumvia. That made me more worried, since they hadn't (to my knowledge) been fighting up until now, so they as well were supposedly in good health. But with high lvl agents, wizards and emmies, coupled with many army divisions, I was still quite easily able to secure Pellinor in a couple of turns.

In the end I was most worried about about seeing the Amazons, Red Dragons, Elves or even the Pirates at the gate of Stormwind, so my prio one was to build citadel->castle->great castle->legendary castle there. Was also somewhat ready that anyone would turn up in The Sword Coast for a visit, or even some of the northern kingdoms in Pellinor, trying to hinder me from getting and holding 4 regions. I must admit I was a bit surprised when in the last turn the Elves surprise attacked and conqured 3 of my PCs in the southern Zamora, I was not prepared for that I must admit! Still, it was too little, too late, as I was able to secure Pellinor that same last turn and declare victory. Would I not have been able to get Pellinor this turn it might have played out differently, since I don't think it would have been impossible for the Elves to grab Zamora from me the next turn.

Speaking about next turn, one last thing that might be of interest to know. On T21 (the second last turn) I was quite trigger happy already, and had actually thought of trying to go for the win. I had already set my orders with trying to directly usurp multiple PCs in Pellinor owned by the Elves and Amazons, hoping to secure Pellinor and declaring victory. This because I was worried about everybody else ganging up on me because I already had gotten 3 regions (similar to what happened to the Amazons a couple of turns earlier). I was all set and done, pressed the "Ready" button as one of the last players at that point. I went to sleep, and it might very well have been that the turn would have been processed with those my first orders, which in retroperspect would not have played out well for me, and also would not have made me positioned to win the next turn either. In this scenario we would probably still be playing and nobody knows how that would have ended... But, what happened was that the turn was still unresolved when I woke up, I had second thoughts and realized I would probably be better of playing it more safe, by first rebelling the PCs and get rid of competing emmies with sleep/kidnap. So, fortunately I changed my orders and it was the right decision and got me the win.

Thanks to all, as said I had a really nice time in this game, and very happe to score my first ever win in Maelstrom! Would be very glad to hear from the rest of you in this game as well, how things went on your end and in your perspective!

Nice Job Dwellomir.  My goal with the EL was basically to experiment with group compositions.  In my first time playing the elves, I build a very nice Viking army, with which I was easily able to conquer legendary castles, with few losses.  This game I was looking at companions, what few there are, but still, with training to elite, I though maybe the EL could field several very nice smaller companion armies.  Unfortunately, while I was still experimenting, the RD looked about to win.  However, it only looked that way because I wasn't paying enough attention... it was the AM who was about to win... and when I took my incomplete army to stormgate to stop what I thought must be the RD, the AM was also there.  So, with the weakest of the three armies, I faced two powerful armies.  The RD and AM attacked each other, and they both attacked me.

It could not have gone better for me than it did, but unfortunately it was still not enough for me to come out on top.  The AM and RD fought first, then the weakened RD attack me, and was soundly defeated, actually giving me a boost in group strength, but the AM was still too powerful, and pretty much wiped me out.

After that battle when I realized it was the AM who was going to run away with the game, I mobilized my political corp and retasked wizards with creating four teleporting divisions to stop the AM in Pellinor... Only to find a couple turns later the AM declared me neutral and left the region, while the UN came in with his win attempt.  I shifted the divisions to Zamora, but was a turn too late.  If I had taken my groups to Pellinor to help out my politicals, I might have had a shot at stopping him, but my groups were small and designed for PC combat, and wouldn't stand up to another group, so I took a shot at Zamora instead.  Final mistake.

Good write up...

I think the WA and TY were gone by T12, DA by T16, and BL on last turn 22. I couldn’t get in there to fill any voids being up in corner. I screwed around to much in this one watching all the fights. Great WIN for the UN.. congrats

As the Amazon I started in Nyvaria and got really lucky on artifacts early. I picked up the key of the gem (boo!) and landed on a quest which just happened to be the gem of planes (what are the odds? Yeah!). I picked up the last herd of stallions, too, so pretty much had two teleporting town taking groups before turn 6.

I started with a sea town in Pellinor and didn't want to give it up. My hidden capital accessed the sea so I built up my navy early anticipating it helping against the DA. The DA figured that out quick and we were at war before turn 10. He created a large army group, which pummeled one of my small groups, but it escaped, and that was my only reversal with the DA.

I decimated his diplomatic corps, took his capital, and we had a sea battle where he lost 5 fleets and I lost one. He dropped after that, not before finding my capital the turn he dropped.

At this point I also stumbled on the TY capital at a sea village in Pellinor and took it, which I think was his last gasp after the RD crushed him.

Seeing a chance at victory, I moved on Stormgate with my gating army group, only to find a large EL and RD army there, too. The battle went well, with the Elves getting crushed, the RD escaping with 40%? damages and me holding Stormgate. Elite Amazon brigades a plenty... growl.
Then I turned on Pellinor and Untamed lands for the victory.

The gig was up, of course, and the PI came after Nyvaria as did the Un in Pellinor. So I was taking on the UN, EL, RD and PI. No bueno.

I think I had a chance on Turn 17 and experimented with diplomacy which failed against a castled minor city in Pellinor. I was really trying to save orders (attack + windstorm took two actions, versus a level 3 diplomacy.) It was supposed to work given my 200k group, but did not.

After that, I started getting low on food as the RD was hitting my villages at Pellinor was overrun with UN. DuPont as the Red is always tenacious, and quite tactically capable. PI took Nyvaria, too, but didn't find my capital. He also killed 5(!) emmis in one turn. Nice work, Agent Orange. Great tactic- take my PCs, wait for the diplomatic counterattack, maintain status quo... profit?!!?

I gated to take Stormgate seeing the UN was about to win, but he declared and that was it.

Nice job, Dwellomir!

Just to satisfy my curiosity, would your 4AM have had a chance to take my ~235k Stormgate capital you think?

Since I relied on getting the victory, I didn't have recon up on Stormgate that turn so I didn't get the size and value.

I don't know. Probably not? I have 25% of artifacts, 10% extra morale, 10% extra defense from artifacts

Windstorm, Fear (25% cap), valor (15%) from spells.

15% extra fear from the mammoths.

I didn't know you had a legendary castle. Nice work.

I declared you neutral because your army was defeated and  I was being pillaged by Pirates and batting the RD 2+ times/turn, and I could only have two enemies. EL definitely cost me Pellinor, but the UN grabbed the dropped cookies.

Do you really think so? What about the rest of you, do you concur that it would have been possible to get it? A lot of bonuses yes, but still... And isn't the capital bonus added to defence as well, or is it already counted into that value of ~235k?

Would be interesting to see what you guys think, for future reference...  Angel

235K minus 35% spell/mammoths (cause fear of two or more so about 10%) from fear = 152,750. Standard of valor 30% defense add/Shield? 15% valor spell. Champion stallions 5% moral, renown standard 10% valor. Leader bonus already in calculation I think.

Pop center 152,750
You start 106,694 against pop add valor 25% 133,000 and change. 5% moral for stallions is 140,000 ish now add presence of P6 shield 15% (maybe a bit more) and 30% from Standard of valor so about 45% shield bonus. And then add windstorm and P6 lightning against the pop prior to combat. So it would be close I think. Capital/other artifacts cancel out maybe?
