So, this was the fourth game, and first win, for me in Maelstrom. Had a great time, thanks to all who participated!
Started in The Sword Coast as the Underworld, and tried to keep a low profile at the start, only getting involved in diplomatical means to stop the Warlocks from getting the major city in Zamora, in which I was successful. I was also lucky to start with my (secret) capital town in a water area, so pretty well secured and with the possibility to build a port there in the future.
At the time around T6 or so I was ready to get more involved in Zamora, which I could do with the knowledge that my other neighbors would probably be occupied with each other and not disturbing me; this since the Rangers of Krynn and Black Dragons of Zanthia were at each others throat, as did the Tyrants of Mythgar opposed to the Red Dragons of the Untamed lands, and finally the Amazons of Nyvaria fighting the Dark Elves of Pellinor. If it was because of the bad start or for other reasons I don't know, but the Warlocks didn't put up much resistance and by T12 I was able to secure Zamora with the Warlocks dropping the game, as did the Tyrants of Mythgar (badly battered by the Red Dragons I guess).
As I also had been so lucky as to stumble upon the Plow on T9 (and also a lot of other artifact goodies, The Sword Coast was really crawling with artifacts this game), I decided to bide my time and concentrating on building up. I was a bit worried about the Red Dragons since the Tyrants of Mythgar were beaten, but they got their hands full with the Amazons instead, fighting over control of Pellinor, with the Dark Elves also still fighting to keep control of their home region Pellinor.
I was able to build up my PCs and armies, training agents and wizards, as well as gathering even more artifacts and some random agent missions to try to disrupt other kingdoms - and things were really going all well at this point, until I on T16 (as a lot of you others as well I guess) started to get real worried about the Amazons, since they had been able to secure 3 regions, and I knew they were also strong in the battle for Pellinor. Especially since the Dark Elves also gave up at this point meaning Pellinor would be even easier to secure.
My plans at this point were to get involved east, so Mythgar, Pellinor and/or Stormgate were all potential targets, but the Amazon threat to victory made me speed up my plans and also set the first target for Stormwind, to which I sent a couple of Princes, both holding the Onyx Talisman. But it took a couple of turns to get them there, and at the same time I started moving my armies and other resources east, with the thought that getting (and then also keeping) Stormwind would make Pellinor the most feasable 4th region for me, by concentrating my resources in those neighboring regions, rather than Mythgar, Krynn or Zanthia. Since I was a little bit late to the party though, I think I have to thank the Red Dragons (and perhaps also the Elves?) for keeping the Amazons at bay those sweaty turns around 17-18. I think Pine Needle was fairly close to scoring the victory there...
T19 my two princes were able to turn Stormwind, and I also had fresh, big army divisions rolling in in Pellinor. My diplomatic corps was also quite good, and agents too of course, so were feeling quite comfortable at this point. Also relocated my capital to Stormwind, partly because I wanted to negate the possibility for others to take it by diplomatic means, and partly so I could get all my remaining agents, priestesses and emmies in range of Pellinor, fast. I knew it would be tricky with both the Amazon and Red Dragon precence in Pellinor, but since they had been fighting each other already for a long time, and also fighting in other regions, I relied on that they were so worn out that I still would have no bigger problem with them in Pellinor, especially since the Pirates also had started rumbling with the Amazons. The Elves however, seemed to have the same thought, and in the end my fight for Pellinor ended up being mostly opposed the Elves of Triumvia. That made me more worried, since they hadn't (to my knowledge) been fighting up until now, so they as well were supposedly in good health. But with high lvl agents, wizards and emmies, coupled with many army divisions, I was still quite easily able to secure Pellinor in a couple of turns.
In the end I was most worried about about seeing the Amazons, Red Dragons, Elves or even the Pirates at the gate of Stormwind, so my prio one was to build citadel->castle->great castle->legendary castle there. Was also somewhat ready that anyone would turn up in The Sword Coast for a visit, or even some of the northern kingdoms in Pellinor, trying to hinder me from getting and holding 4 regions. I must admit I was a bit surprised when in the last turn the Elves surprise attacked and conqured 3 of my PCs in the southern Zamora, I was not prepared for that I must admit! Still, it was too little, too late, as I was able to secure Pellinor that same last turn and declare victory. Would I not have been able to get Pellinor this turn it might have played out differently, since I don't think it would have been impossible for the Elves to grab Zamora from me the next turn.
Speaking about next turn, one last thing that might be of interest to know. On T21 (the second last turn) I was quite trigger happy already, and had actually thought of trying to go for the win. I had already set my orders with trying to directly usurp multiple PCs in Pellinor owned by the Elves and Amazons, hoping to secure Pellinor and declaring victory. This because I was worried about everybody else ganging up on me because I already had gotten 3 regions (similar to what happened to the Amazons a couple of turns earlier). I was all set and done, pressed the "Ready" button as one of the last players at that point. I went to sleep, and it might very well have been that the turn would have been processed with those my first orders, which in retroperspect would not have played out well for me, and also would not have made me positioned to win the next turn either. In this scenario we would probably still be playing and nobody knows how that would have ended... But, what happened was that the turn was still unresolved when I woke up, I had second thoughts and realized I would probably be better of playing it more safe, by first rebelling the PCs and get rid of competing emmies with sleep/kidnap. So, fortunately I changed my orders and it was the right decision and got me the win.
Thanks to all, as said I had a really nice time in this game, and very happe to score my first ever win in Maelstrom! Would be very glad to hear from the rest of you in this game as well, how things went on your end and in your perspective!
