This was a really fun game for me. My course was basically set after the 12th pick of the draft, I was playing GI/DE/WA and selected 11th, and was already feeling very exposed in the middle. Another player (Jhereg, I just found out from the Valhalla results) had selected TR/EL and was choosing between AN or GN. UN had been passed over at this point, so I was hoping and expecting a selection of GN, which would have allowed me to consider not going after that team right away.
But when Jhereg selected AN, I knew that immediate conflict was the order of the day, since otherwise AN would really hit DE's influence over time, as DE's natural enemy. So I scoured the border between R4 and R5 (and also R1 and R5) for pop centers, and sent blocking emissaries to both CD and QC. Luck was with me, and I found quite a few pop centers belonging to TR/EL/AN.
I then began a merry capital-bash strategy that probably ended up going better than I had ever experienced before, capturing and killing multiple Kings and Regents. I also started raising Wizards with WA right away, and used a few strategic Domes to ward off some attempted counterattacks.
I eventually got a P7 into R4 and over two turns destroyed the AN sea capital, which in another stroke of luck, ended up killing all three AN Consuls. At that point, the team dropped, and I can't blame him at all, given how much of a hammering he had taken (a large chunk of it through good luck on my part).
I then stole a march on the growing BL/RA/RD team, by moving in force on R2 and the by-then faltering WI/DA/DW team, a turn or two prior to RD moving into R2 as well. I ended up fighting a defensive battle in R5 and R8 (which I won with some more key Domes) while fighting a running battle in R2 for control. The DE Prince gating ability ended up being critical, as did more Domes.
I finally took control of the region after timing a DE Prince Gate into DK, on the same turn the WI/DA/DW team ended up dropping. I one-step 330'd the city the turn after that, and that along with other DE pop centers (some being held with the assistance of GI 310's) flipped control of R2 over to DE, to go along with R4 (DE), R7 (DE), R8 (DE), R5 (GI), R1 (WA) for the victory.
A well-fought war, and again, I enjoyed it a great deal! Many thanks to Jhereg, Bash, and Drogo for the game.
