534 Ends by Rex

Congratulations to Canticar for his Gnomish Victory!  I fought hard to keep the IL and NE off the throne.

I played the DE in game 534.  I got it with the 12 pick of the draft actually. 

534 started as one of the last full power wizard games and they were a force to contend with for sure.

I was headed into region 3 when the Pirates raided my fleets and caused me to redirect my focus on to him.  That raid cost me several fleets and multiple turns of merchant revenue so I was determined to get payback.

Then suddenly the BL dropped and I worried the NE would quickly become unstoppable by gaining mastery of 3 regions so early.

I did what I could to grab the Amberland PC's the BL let go while fighting the NE and PI.  Then got blitzkrieged by the IL while fighting the two other Kingdoms.

I abandoned my attacks in 5 and moved all of my attention against the IL  Successfully blocking the IL victory 3 out of the last 4 turns.

I was surprised the NE never regained the Talking Mountains from the IL.  I wondered if no attempt was made or if the IL just repelled it.

Yep, damn Hawk blocked my Rex claims, mostly single-handedly. The Necro and the Sorcerer did help block the second and third attempts, but it was mostly Hawk's Demons. And, of course, that epic fail by me the turn I actually DID control 4 regions. I miscalculated and did not think I would own all 4, so I did not make the Rex claim. 

Anyway, I had a lot of fun, first taking my own region of Arcania, mixing it up with the Nomad a bit when he invaded. I wiped his main army and sent him packing. Rather than follow him home, I went for Synisvania. Took it pretty quickly, but the darned Lizards fought back forever, and never quite went away. Also, the Pirates were a bit of an occasional thorn. Then I took Eastern Steppes from the Demons and then I did a quick invasion of Talking while the Necro was busy in Amberland. Took most of the region and turned him hostile all in one turn. Wanted to make Talking no more inviting to him than any other region. But, I was pretty spread out, so I could not quite make the victory when the Demons hit me in Arcania, then Synisvania, then Eastern Steppes. Very mobile, very deadly. Nice job by Hawk. By then, the Demons and the Sorcerer were also hitting me in Arcania, sometimes taking, sometimes destroying. I still had a chance to win at the end, and did not think the Gnome could get to a 4th region that quickly. Not sure why Oakendell remained uncontrolled for so long.

Once again, leading in status points for a lot of the game and gaining 3 regions too quickly made me a target. Guess I need to slow down region 3 or speed up region 4 or try to do them simultaneously. But, given the opposition, I was happy to finish with a 2nd place, though I will likely never forget owning 4 regions on Turn 30 and failing to issue a Rex order.

Congrats to Canticar on leading the Gnomes to victory and to Son of Conan for taking the Necro to a podium. Definitely a hats off to Hawk and DuPont who made serious dents in my strategy.

WOW, I’m glad to see the write-ups for this game. There was a lot of activity I was not aware of.

I was happy to take Runnimede uncontested and then started looking at either the Sands or Arcania. By the time I was ready to move, the IL already had two regions so I decided the easier target would be the NO.

I was mostly right. I was able to take all the pop centers in the sands during my invasion, except for one. The NO had moved his capital to the city and increased the defense to over 150k. He had a massive army to support so I knew he was short food but the city was producing over 50k gold so he was likely good in that area.

I would have been happy to leave the city and move on but the NO would not drop. I harassed him with my agents and took back every pop center he took from me but he continued to be a thorn in my side so I was forced to take the city from him. It took four turns with three groups sitting at the city to meteorite the defense low enough to take the city.

While I was trying to take the city from the NO there was a lot of activity north of me. I saw the IL take his third region and then try for the win two or three times. He failed each time, but then he actually controlled four regions and did not declare. This activity obviously gave me a sense of urgency.

It seemed to me that the DU and SO had been fighting each other for a while. The DU dropped but it took the SO a while to gain control of Torvale. To me that meant he was either severely hurt during the battle with the DU or he was helping to keep victory from the IL or both. In any case he seemed like a good target. All I could do is hope I could beat the IL to the win.

Once the NO was no longer a factor I moved on the SO in Torvale and took the region quickly. I had prepared to move into Oakendale and once I secured Torvale I moved immediately to Oakendale. That region had been devastated by the war between the DU and SO. There were only two villages remaining and some of the towns had defenses of less than 100. I was able to secure Oakendale in two turns for the win.

I was lucky that the DE, NE, and SO were able to keep the IL from the win. It enabled me to sneak in for a quick victory. I gained my last two regions in a total for four turns.

Congratulations to everyone who finished. In this game it was more than the podium finishers who deserve congratulations as it seems others had a significant impact on the game.
