Forum Only Diplomacy Suggestion
#1
I love the diplomacy side of the game as it just feels like it’s how the game was meant to be played.  I also understand how, especially with a low player base, a full diplomacy game can turn into just a game of pre-formed alliances even if not be design, simply from falling into relationships and grudges from prior games.

So I see the Forum Only Diplomacy as a kind of compromise, at least until we get many more players.  That said, I hate having to disclose absolutely everything publicly.  So I have an idea I was hoping to gauge interest in for a future game.

Would people be open to a game that follows all the same rules as the current Forum Only Diplomacy game (Discussion every 3 turns, only 1 ally, etc...) But add a new wrinkle for allies to communicate via private message on the forums during the turns where communication is allowed?  Still only every 3 turns.

Obviously there is a trust factor involved but that same trust factor exists today in that we trust that 2 players are not using external communication methods.

Any thoughts?

Seems reasonable. If you get one ally you have one person to chat privately with. Also opens the door to letting someone mentor someone if needed.

That's actually a good point too.

I'm persuadable, but my initial reaction is that I'm less than keen on the idea.

Fair enough. What's driving that reluctance?

I am just picturing two people working together to jump somebody unannounced.

Oh definitely a possibility, but I would hope/think that as soon as people declare allies that those around them take notice and prepare. It could paint a nice big target on the backs of the allies even if they have no offensive plans.

I would also love to try a "role-playing" variant where folks actually tried to play as their king/kingdom. Elves hate Darkelves, everyone mistrusts the Warlock, etc...
For example, I'd love to be able to play the Underworld as a backstabbing opportunist but unfortunately, I know that people would then associate that with me as a player in every game that followed.
I'd love to see some real politics on the forum... trying to rally people to the cause...
I tried that in an early game and some folks got really offended

Just tossing ideas out. To me, playing a silent anonymous game just loses so much that I remember as being Alamaze... It just becomes a sterile war game where you encounter faceless opponents who may as well be AI controlled but even worse because at least an AI would not drop mid-game and dramatically tilt the outcome.

For example.

I miss my old roll playing days. Smile

I've tried role-playing a few of the Forum only communication games. I'm never sure if it amuses people or pisses them off - back when there was a Troll kingdom, I once played that as 'Big Chief No Fart' and pretty much acted like an uncultured Boor. I'd be willing to try it again, but it's never much fun when you are the only guy dressed up at the costume party.

Agreed!

And I do see some people try to have fun with it but I think it might be helpful to designate a game as a variant for that because I also see folks get offended by it.
