Game 110 - Out Of The Silent Planet
#11
And now for the report that everyone's been waiting for!!! The (barely) 3rd place finish of the ANCIENT ONES. Since I am killing time at my office, yes Dusi I work from time to time, I'm doing this all from memory. I decided right off to take an aggressive stance against the TR since we obviously cant communicate a deal for 4. I think that I denigrated him once or twice right off to crush any political ambitions in the region and I also divined his towns so that I could locate his cap. I was able to snatch up 4 pretty quick, consolidate my group into a powerful starting group with 3 p3's and good leaders. I moved it to TR cap, masked the group and started the siege. As expected, TR showed up in force on the 3rd turn of my siege. I was hoping that my masking of the group and seiging would make it appear weaker than it was, and that TR would attack. As luck had it, TR attacked with a much stronger group and ran through 3 walls o'flame, ending that group and a major asset of the TR kingdom. This is where I made the first of many major pooch screws. I hadn't seiged anything since the 90's and I forgot that you cant defend during a siege. oooops. So I did not complete the 3rd siege round. Consolation prize was 1tr = no more. I had control of 4 and had set my sights on 7. TR cap was at the far south end of 4 and I had recond the top PC's in 7. 2 squares away from TR cap was UN cap with a HORDE of agents and Ems. My choices were:
1- finish off a badly weakened Troll kingdom
2- go after UN cap for a decisive blow
3- Only go for pc's in 7
4- fully invade 7 with Ems and go for UN cap with army and throw weight against GN because.......... I am awesome and can handle 3 kindgoms while having no allies.

Had I gone for action plan #1 I might have been an early victor. But Nope, I went for option 4 and moved on the UN cap, hoping the TR would rage quit the game as he was hostile in 4, with almost no PC's and a damaged military.

For the next major pooch screw, I decided that I would Seige the UN cap and attack the following turn when I could buff it up with reinforcements. I had a level 9ish agent that I was using for counter-esp to protect my leaders and wizards in 1AN. What I forgot was that said agent was at my capital and I relocated my cap to the water that turn. I thought I read my report wrong when I looked at my 1AN and I was down to 1 wizard and lost a warlord. Dammit! So that sucked. Next turn, I believe TR found my sole high level agent and killed him, so there went my next 2 wizards (one showed up for my eso) and my remaining leaders..... Huge blow. I could have taken the UN cap initially with solid losses, but kept my leaders and wizards in tact. Oh well. Now I have the depressing situation of pissing off 3 kingdoms and I have no military. Luckily, my Ems had been doing quite well in taking PCs in 7. Having 4 consuls is awesome for denigrating and keeping other kingdoms at bay.

What I could not stop was TR taking 3-4 pcs a turn with his groups and losing a few here and there to GN. At this point, there was zero hope to achieve my SVC as I needed a P4 and warlords.... 2 items I would never achieve. I decided to go political. I always had my influence around 20 from turn 8 on. I hired about 8 govs and turned them all into barons, then became a political nightmare for regions 4 and 7. I limited TR and GN to what they could take with military which was a max of 8 pcs per turn, but made sure that I was constantly hiring and moving barons for the rest of the game. around turn 30 I decided to take a stab at GI and move into 8 since no one else looked to be checking him. That didn't work out and it left 4 & 7 for the TR to pick up, which he did. When I pulled my head out of my butt, I took both regions back right away using 15 or so nobles. The only major politacl setback I had was at the end of the game. I sent 8 or 9 Ems to region 8, was tolerant in the area, and failed with almost all of them including princes and dukes. My influence was at 20 so this was a shock. Then at the last turn, I was booted from HC which I think cost me 2nd place as I was about 175 points behind 2nd. HC is worth 200 points right?? Here's my RIP list, as you can see TR did a good job nabbing barons and killing level 1 recon agents named "FA______" :

FANATIC 4 BLOODGARD 11 FANATIC 4 DANGLE 12 FANATIC 1 DAANG 14 AGENT 10 DWARFLUV 36 AGENT 1 FALCON 14 AGENT 1 FANGOFILE 15 AGENT 1 FANGRET 21 AGENT 1 FAFALA 25 AGENT 1 FAAAZ 30 FANATIC 1 KGB 12 PRIESTESS KITTY 5 PRIESTESS POUGH MAHA 2 PRIESTESS REKOOH 18 PRIESTESS VIXEN 18 DUKE BEAVIS 34 BARON ROCKY 33 GOVERNOR SUSHI 34 BARON AXLROSE 33 PRINCE CHEWBAKA 16 AGENT 2 DAGGER 5 GOVERNOR EENDGAME 36 COUNT ELVIS 31

The next sums up how I feel about the game:

"Had I gone for action plan #1 I might have been an early victor. But Nope, I went for option 4 and moved on the UN cap, hoping the TR would rage quit the game as he was hostile in 4, with almost no PC's and a damaged military." Almost, I stayed around strictly to spite the AN. My only beef with the AN at this point is his constant use of AXLROSE as a name.

Armies are easy to get and keep for the TR(unless you face the GI with about equal forces). I determined to put them to max use. My goal was to take a PC each turn with each. Then to start landing on PCs the turn after I got notice the AN emmys were landing. This paid off well, I thought, as I decided to move south into 7. I thought I was getting ahead of the AN ability to pop barons in. Taking 7 seemed a breeze and I got ahead of myself, again. I decided to explore Oakendale and try and slow the GI a bit in 5. Immediately, the AN popped in emissaries again. Combine that with a chance meeting with the BL at Evanon and I decided to return to 4. Like was noted earlier, when I met the BL at Evanon, I figured that he would be moving on the GI and would not need my help. I did not need another enemy, but I think the BL quit harassing the GI better than I did because he marched west instead of east.

At this time, the Gnome showed up at OB with 3 P6 and an army group and I was very concerned he would make a comeback as well. The GN lost the attempt at Meridon and I never heard from him again except when I landed an army at his last PC, a village capital at WL in Arcania.

The single greatest mistake I think I made was when I botched an invis order for my lone wizard in a patrol. I believe the AN wiz killed him and then I spent most of the last 20 turns with a slept King and slept emissaries with no recourse. Being hostile in your home region is devastating. My influence was between 8 and 10 for much of the game.

Thank you for your posts, I enjoyed the read. I enjoyed the game very much, but am also very glad it is over.

Hile Troy,

I did kill that wizard early on. And I forgot to mention that I slept yours and the GN king for 90% of the game. I think the GN could have done a lot more damage, but he/she seemed to lose spirit after getting smacked around a bit. GN wizards popped off a few magical denigrates from time to time, could've been worse... You got some sweet revenge by getting the last HC issue to boot me off. I bid aprox $55,000 too boot the GI off so you must've spent some good coin for that issue. And it took me from 2nd to 3rd place.

I want to remind all players in all games, that for Valhalla we recognize personas for Chancellor (mentoring, none from this game), Iron-Willed, and Infamous. I would think we might have a couple in the Iron-Willed category, at least.

I would like to nominate Lord Diamond, the RA player, for the Iron-Willed award for this game.

I paid 97k for that high council issue. The previous one that I completely messed up I bid 120k.

Game #110: 39 turns, no diplomacy, no alliances, no mercy.

No bathroom breaks.

Man, this game thread has been a revelation. Not about the dynamics of the anonymous game, though that's cool and all, but...bluefile2 has kids? Can the world survive this catastrophe?

Not sure how this comment ties in with the thread, but yes I have kids. By the time they hit teenage years, you might be their Alamaze match Jumbie, but only with lots of practice!
