Ring of Protection

Can someone tell me what a ring of protection does, and how to use it? I think it helps versus agents trying to kill your character, but I don't know if it works against sleep spells.

It helps against sleeps. Imagine my "joy" when I did an unusual sighting only to find out my prize was a ring of protection...

50% spell protection against any spell that would effect an emissary.

That is beneficial spells and harmful spells.
