::Hail ye powerful and mighty Lord of the Giants::

Know, 'O wizened One, that a peaceful Cimmerian town now has cold-blooded reptiles slithering at its gate. Both troops and a diplomat of Lizard origin now scheme to seize this town of Hawk Landing of my people who dwell in area GK of the map.

If thou art so inclined, I invite thee and thine to join me in a great lizard hunt. Let us eradicate these cold-blooded devils, together. What say ye, High King of the Giants?

I am prepared to guard thy kingdom's Western flank against foreign incursion. Let our kingdoms be stronger, together.

This is a good example of how game designers suffer a disconnect from their' games' players.

Two entirely different thought processes. Wintering is a half-ass approach to "solving" a problem that the game designer creates. Game designers shouldn't assume that all players will gravitate towards their red-headed stepchildren of game design.

You have the ability to use the order wintering troops (Issue 1 time for each group you need).  This will give you a portion of your food and gold back.  Also consider, do I have fleets in different regions I can sell for now, you have superior starting fleets so this is something you can also do to create cash.  Another trick for regions were you have a city, raise the food loss production, so that it isn't negative, this reduces it from hitting so hard.  Lastly in a full diplomacy game make an ally in the Southern regions to trade food/good at reduced rates.  Just some ideas.

I need gold, not a portion of gold. Wintering isn't a solution tot he actual problem.

Sell ships to create cash? I am learning the game in segments, and sea power will likely be the last, or one of the last, segments of Alamaze that I focus upon.

Raise the food loss production in the minor city, by doing what? Spending more gold that I don't have to reduce the loss rate of food in that city?

Ah, yes, in a full diplomacy game, just make allies with distant, faraway lands, to offset food loss production, because that creates gold. The whole trading scheme is one that I have looked upon with ridicule. Some of the game design choices made long ago leave me just shaking my head, the trade system being but one of several.

Diplomacy is a curious thing in Alamaze. Alamaze, generally speaking, is a very quiet place.

Cimmerians - Turn #7
Game 5712
Full Diplomacy Game

I missed a turn of posting about this game, it seems. Ah, well, I'll just try to continue on from here.

Now, the Lizards have dispatch both a diplomat (one that I know of, anyway) and a military group, 3LI in patrol form, to the Cimmerian town located in area GK of the map. Clearly, someone learned nothing from Game 5684. This Lizard player is about to precipitate a war between our kingdoms. Messing with my town has already been demonstrated to steel my resolve, as a player. Now, history is about to repeat itself.

And this act of military and diplomatic aggression, as Wookie Panz yells in my digital ear, the following:

(09-25-2023, 07:43 PM)Wookie Panz Wrote: You have the Cimmerians, the meanest guys in the north.

You should be out taking stuff from your northern neighbors like a true Cimmerian!

Go out and take what you need.  You are the king of winter!

Well, the one turn that I don't leave a military group located at my town at area GK, the Lizards decide to try and slither in. And Wookie Panz wondered aloud why I was raising more troops. Because, Dan, other kingdoms and other players sometimes prove to be up to shit. Am I worse off, now, to have raised those very same troops?

In the same turn that the Lizards acquire a Warlord, a Lizard military group and a Lizard political emissary show up at my town. Mere coincidence? I think not.

I posted a message to the Giants player, here, because the Giants player has disabled the PM function, apparently. Which is fine, but it makes player-to-player communication more difficult.

Not even out looking for a war, but apparently, war has found me. <<sigh>>

So be it.

Maximus, it is common practice for a kingdom to take control of the foreign town and village in their original region. I am not trying to wage war against you; I am just doing what everyone else does.

When I first started playing Alamaze (Maelstrom), I asked about this topic. I was told that it is common practice to do just that.

BTW: It is only a patrol. My army is elsewhere. I am not trying to start a war with you. I am just doing what we are expected to do and encouraged to do.

GI to CI

As you are not at war, I do not need to decide on a side to take. It is true that most kingdoms take all towns and villages in their chosen region, especially because having total control gives one Loyal status, which has some benefits. I know that I took the foreign-controlled town and village in Darkover. Only Giants are allowed to own property in Darkover.

These Giants are a different kind of Giant, kind and gently, prone to poetry and the riding of giant rocs for sport. However, if angered, they can swing a mean stick.

My efforts in my own region were hampered somewhat by my own ineptitude. For three months in a row, I forgot to send a prince to the city. Oops. Nice veteran move. Oh well, it should all be rectified this turn as I take the last of the population centers and close my borders so that we may enjoy peace and solitude and poetry.

If you do end up at war, or if you decide to declare war over the taking of GK, do let me know. My Giants will likely take a side in such a battle, or perhaps just pop some corn and watch.

As for a disabled PM, not sure how that would happen.

I understand, and do not dispute, that it is a "common practice" among Alamaze veterans. Not all "common practices" are savory practices. My own views of such have been explained in this forum, previously, on at least two different occasions:

https://alamaze.net/forum/thread-17017-p...l#pid85310

https://alamaze.net/forum/thread-17061-p...l#pid85465

Just doing what "everyone" else does could easily lead down all kinds of paths. I'm not everyone. I chart my own kingdom's approach to foreign policy.

My own "common practice" (common to me, anyway) is to declare war upon those who mess with my kingdom's population centers.

Maximus,

Since I am not the warmonger that you say I am, I will not take your town this turn. I am moving my group, and I will move out my emmies the following turn.

Windstar the 3rd,

A partial withdrawal of Lizard assets, eh? This is no time for half measures. Your emissaries are currently trespassing. The removal of your military group is a step in the right direction. Your emissaries, however, do not have my leave to languish in Cimmerian territory. They arrived without invitation, and with mischief on their mind.

Our two kingdoms stand at the brink of war. Removal of all Lizard assets from Cimmerian sovereign territory is non-negotiable. If they can be dispatched to arrive, simultaneously, on one turn cycle, then they can likewise be withdrawn, simultaneously, on one turn cycle.

Cimmerian resolve should not be tested, for it won't end well for your kingdom, if it is.

Very well, Maximus. I have moved both of my emissaries out of your town.
