It's On

Just to put on notice - we will start the 2016 Alamaze 3rd Cycle Championship about mid-October.

Edited 9/27: The top player in each zone will compete!  (No entrance fee for the Championship.)

FYI, Valhalla already has a program for inviting the Champions by zone if you want to go that route.

Please do not take any of my comments as a personal insult or as a criticism of the game 'Alamaze', which I very much enjoy. Rather, I hope that my personal insight and unique perspective may, in some way, help make 'Alamaze' more fun, a more successful financial venture, or simply more sustainable as a long-term project. Yeah.  Let's do that.  As of October 15.

Wonderful. On October 15th, I will post the Valhalla Championship invites after the Noon turns have run.

Some notes of interest:

- The best performer in each zone will be invited to participate.
- EDIT: Each invitee will only be invited to play in one zone. If the player would have qualified for more than one zone, the system will randomly choose one.
- An invitee may only elect to take the zone offered or to decline the invitation. If he declines, alternate players will also be listed in order of performance and the original invitee will not participate.
- A player may be listed as an alternate in more than one zone.
- The invitee may choose either kingdom in the zone.
- Only Active Players as of 10/15 will be considered. If you recently left Alamaze and have just returned, please let me know so that I can put you on the Active Rolls. Otherwise, you won't go back to Active until you complete a game.

So where I performed best chooses what kingdom I get? wouldn't it make more sense to just pick the top 12 players and have random assigned order and we pick zones/kingdoms from there?

For the past two championships it was decided by the best player of each kingdom. It was, however, a bit of a logistical nightmare because some players led several kingdoms and there was a lot of back and forth about who would play what. With The Choosing, we decided to base it on zones to avoid the complication of having 24 kingdoms participate.

The logic was designed to avoid the complication and confusion. It is actually quite nice, actually.

The logic only counts status points earned during the previous twelve months.

We had never considered a top twelve by status points before and so didn't consider it now. It is a method that rewards quantity over quality, I think, and the disparity will only get worse as we move forward. This time next year it will even be a larger disparity that only rewards Imperators and not high performing players who happen to play fewer games.

We designed Valhalla to, hopefully, be complete for quite a while without requiring extra manual steps like the previous Championships did. As it stands, we can provide a new Championship file anytime Rick wants one.

There is kind of an issue that some kingdoms will just generate more status points by the nature of the kingdom over others. So although I really dominated as a RD or TY my SO will have more status points just because they had 11 wizards and are a good agent kingdom.

I think limiting to only currently active players should already remove some of the trouble we had in the past. I know if I earned the right to be at a top spot for multiple kingdoms I feel I should get to choose which represents me in a championship game.

Another way could be by seeding the top player from each region but the game would be played as a silent game. The highest status points for a single game played picks there kingdom first in the championship match.

LD I dont really have an issue with how you select the 12 players, its the zone they are given to play.
