I passed because the game format does not interest me.
As to the criteria for determining the best players, there really is no definitive formula for making this determination but it makes perfect sense for Rick to choose total status points.
I think we can all agree that Rick has a true passion for Alamaze but we have to remember that this is also a business. Reviewing the players that have the most status points confirms that players that have participated in more games tend to have more status points, there are exceptions. If you play in more games you pay more money, remember this is a business. From a business owner perspective you want to encourage people to buy your product. In Alamaze, one way to provide encouragement is to advertise the players with the most status points as being the best players.
I view Rick in the same light as a professional athlete. He loves what he does. He has a passion for his game but in the end it is still a business.
Yes, shamelessly I would like to encourage players to be in more games rather than a couple so that's true.
The Confluence / Slugfest is a custom setup that requires time from Mike (adding additional PC's for one thing), seems like its more for experienced players as you're managing two positions, and the invitation offered two free slots (so that's worth about $70 over the course of the game).
However, this is the Championship for the Lords of Alamaze, so if we get a consensus on a format, I don't mind. That may be hard to do, but I don't want deserving players skipping because of format.
So while I would like to get it started (slipped my mind in October), I'm fine with discussion on the format and it can be 12 players instead of 10, different ranking, etc. Let's say if we get 8 players that would be included in a suggested format that's a consensus.
So let's hear but I would ask we not have lots of possibilities or we'll never get to consensus.
I would think if your removing other formats for under 10 players then primeval should be removed and team games should be added as they are still single players. Perhaps make a team victory below gold in a steel.
I am out any way it goes but team games counted in the past
Thanks JF, I just looked up Primeval and those games should not be included. The team games are not individual wins. The team must win and Valhalla just recognizes the player with the most status points.
I am proposing an alternate format and selection process for consideration.
I put together a list of Kingdom champions based on Valhalla standing. This has been the selection process for the last several Champions games.
There are many variables so this is the criteria I used (the criteria can change if agreed upon)
1. Game formats included in the selection process are Steel, and Slugfest. I chose these formats as they are individual games with at least 10 players. Other formats have fewer players so the chance of making the podium is better.
2. JF has suggested we include team games. They are not included in this post as team games are won by the entire team declaring victory and Valhalla grants the win to the player on the wining team with the most status points. Playing a team game is very different from playing an individual game. If the majority would prefer to include team status in the selection criteria I will make the adjustment.
3. The selection criteria is 1st place, Podium finish, and Status points. With Status Points being the tie breaker.
As this is the first Champions game in the Choosing format the kingdom selection process must be different than in previous years. I envision that the player that had the best results in a region, as demonstrated by the selection criteria, owns that region and can choose to play either kingdom.
Should a player in the selection process either decide not to participate or has chosen to play a kingdom in a different region they will be removed from all additional region lists. It is as if they were never in the list. The players in kingdom positions following the removed player move up in the standings and a new comparison is made with the best remaining player from the other regional kingdom. As an example, if Du1 has control of region 1 and they decide not to play, then DU2 becomes DU1 and is compared against EL1 to determine who controls the region.
In years past a silent format was used for the championship game. You must win using your own talents not the talents of your friends and neighbors. I propose the same format for this year.
Based on the criteria defined above, this is the champions list for this year. I have attached a spreadsheet that provides better detail and formatting.
