Yeah, there is definitely something going on with the credentials check. Keeps taking me several tries to log in.

Anyway, I can't argue with your points, Senior Tactician. They are all valid. All I can tell you is that there are half a dozen ways to do the selection and we have this same debate almost every year. For instance, Rick favors total status points, you favor total points, but both of these penalize good players who play fewer games. The goal was to get the best player for the best kingdom for each of the kingdoms (so we ended up with the system we have). It is not any more right than any other method, but it does level the playing field for busier people. Like I said, I have no dog in this race, so I am not favoring any one system because of the outcome. Let's face it, Painted Man is on top of Maelstrom no matter how we slice it. Jumpingfist (Draugr) and I used to be on top under the previous game system (but I seriously suck at Maelstrom for some reason).

So, we can start the debate over, but your system means the best players by your definition (most points) get to pick all of the good kingdoms, giving them a further advantage. The biggest challenge in my mind is that under Maelstrom, kingdoms can start anywhere (in the past, someone who played the Elf and won could choose them and their region came with the kingdom so no risk of a bad region for that kingdom). Now, I suppose the AT or the PI with a bad draw could get a land-locked region or the Red could get a watery region. So, there is some merit to changing things up under Maelstrom.

I do not have the patience to sort thru a whole new way of picking the champions, so if folks don't want to use the system we have used, then others can hash this out. I am not upset or offended, just really have had this debate every year for several years now. I will say that your decision to play depending on how this debate goes is sort of like saying you will take your ball and go home. There are a lot of players with different views on this, and no one view is the only right one. So, at this point, I have listed how it would work under the current system (with a good correction catch from PT), and will now step out of the debate.

Good gaming.

You know what's funny... Vball "choosing" not to play.  The truth is, according to his rules, he doesn't qualify to play.  He has a 2nd and 3rd place finish with the AN, which will be picked by someone else, same with his 3rd place finish with the IL, and 2nd place finish with the UN.

Now this gets awkward.  vball, if you honestly don't want to play, I get that, but if this stupid system chooses canticar over vball, yeah, I'm not playing.

People who need to be in the championship for me to play: Brek, strongwill, vball (if he wants)  (and obviously all other players who will get into the game regardless of the system we use).  And ALL winners before non-winners.

These people are among the top 12 strongest players (more importantly, the strongest finishers this year), and its not a championship game without them.

I would be very happy to lead a discussion on, and carry out, any changes we decide as a community.

The challenge would be to come up with a system where you didn't get in Smile

Anything involving ice age and/or black dragons would have me firmly disqualified.

Rick has said many times we run this show.  So I think we should discuss it.  Anyone reading this forum post should contribute if they want.

And, I personally would love to hear many ideas, as I have even changed my own in literally the past 5 hours, even in the past few minutes based on Vballs post.

Here is my argument so far:
There were about 23+ Maelstrom steel games last year, with about 20 unique payers.  Only 9 players won a game.  Winning a game can be very tough (for me, one was, one wasn't).  So, my opinion, any person who has won a game... auto-in.

After that, if less than 12 players... goes by the point system I suggested.  Total points over all finishes.

Kingdom choice:  You get first crack at any kingdom you won with, then, goes by point system I mentioned.  You can also choose any kingdom that no one else has any "dibs" on (such as, in this case, BL, EL, SA or NO) in order based on your total points.

This is simple, easy to figure out, and seems like it gets the strongest finishers into the game.

It is this kind of personal attack that has helped my decision to step out. I did choose not to play before I went out and did all of the work to get the stats so before I knew if I would qualify. So screw you.

Yeah, wasn't an attack.  I was pointing out that an obviously very strong player, dude, which everyone knows, and a good finisher this year despite your problems with the new format, would not get into the game.  Its not right.  I apologize my choice of wording was not better.

Seems to be 2 things in my mind going on:
1- What's needed to make the cut
2 - Once in how is region/kingdom chosen.

Seems to me however you make a cut work people who had the most points for a game how ever that is decided should be in first till it fills to 12, no noon winner from any game should be in before a winner of a game, this seems only logical..
Then top player pick kingdom and region. Does it give a big advantage to the top players like PM/Dragur sure but they earned it.
Any system that bumps out a player with better score seems flawed. And getting a kingdom/region in weird spots sucks, like DU in Krynn for example.
Regardless how it works, I think people talking about it is good.
On a side note if we dropped the top player and the bottom player to sorta even the curve, I think that would be good as well sorry painted!!

Nice Brek, I agree with all but the last sentence.  Also another thought... if you are concerned about rewarding people who play a lot, and those who play very little evenly, we could do a ratio of wins to games played.  Only people who actually won a game would have that score, but we could do a similar ratio of podium to games played.

So for instance Painted won 6 games, versus Agent Orange who only won 1, Painted won 6 times more often.  But... Painted played 18 games, and Agent Orange only played 9.  So, Painted man wins .33, while Agent Orange scores .11 a much narrower margin.  Draugr, with a respectable 3 wins, only played 7 games, making him .43 supplanting Painted for the "pole position" in the game.
