I think my 1st game of Alamaze was game 30 or thereabouts.

I sent Pegasus my $$ as soon as I read the article in the Dragon Magazine. I was set-up as the Dark Elves position and didn't fare well but it was a great time. The Dragon player lived near me and I made a friend. He worked for a company that made holograms and he hooked me up with a lot of really neat holograms of goblins and stuff- they were truly badass!

I played several more games and won a couple.

Phone bills associated with the game were a killer. It will be a LOT better now with emailsSmile

Positions I remember playing:

1st Cycle-

Dark Elves - Tough position when the Westmen were competent. I took Avalon and held on but never was a serious power in the game.

Urik - Unstoppable and won that game. I annihilated several well played positions.

Underworld - I played this 2 times and stole artifacts from everyone and everyone attacked me.

Witch King - Picked up a standby position and did just OK.

2nd Cycle-

Dark Elves - Tough tough position.

Ancient Ones - Unstoppable from the outset. Won game. I think it was an alliances game.

Red Dragon - Unstoppable- Won

Demon Princes - Did really well then backstabbed. This is a fun kingdom.

Witch King - Got smashed.

Gnomes - Picked up standby and did OK. I don't particularly care for this kingdom but it's actually a pretty good flavorful one.

I'd like to try playing them all and look forward to playing again!!

I'm curious as to what your approach was with the Red Dragon. Did you fight it out what the dwarves for the Talking Mountains or did you make an agreement and go elsewhere?

I took out the Dwarves. Really, the Red Dragons are almost unbeatable (early on) if they concentrate. He was a good player but basically could do nothing but hide out there and lose the war of attrition. Then drop-
If we could manage a game without drops it would be really interesting. Back then though who wants to pay 8 bucks or whatever when they're pretty much smashed and have little or negative gold and deteriorating armies and whatnot...

I played Witch King and Red Dragon attacked me from the outset and the same thing. I was pretty much dead. I had the 5th level wizard but shortly my armies were gone and not enough pop centers to finance anything- The other problem for the Witch King is the Giants... you can't just hide in the water there and sit it out.

As far as I know the Red Dragon dictated all the games I played if they were good players.

Giants are uber powerful also.

Compare the Darkelf to those positions and "balanced" isn't even close... Elf is balanced. Some positions need a lot of stuff to go right though in order to really have a chance. This makes the game great though imo. Imbalance. There's also so much strategy and depth.

Like the Witch King for instance. Do you get the level 5 on turn one or use your resources on something else? If you're sitting on a pop center the Red Dragon could be on you turn 1 and you're screwed. What if you go to Viperhead and the Red Dragon is there? What if you wait and see and nobody moved there? If the Giant builds up his fleets and patrols that sea you could take substantial losses. It's his prerogative to do so... Once you spend that starting gold you're on a serious budget if you don't get the Region. Meanwhile, the other Wizard positions have much better initial prospects.
Then, say everything goes well early on. By the time you secure your Region the Elf is there and either the Dwarves or Red Dragon is there. They could both easily be looking to expand into you before you do it to them. Meanwhile the Giant and it's his prerogative to attack you anyways...

Positions like those, Witch King, Dark Elf... have some no-win scenarios which makes the game compelling IMO.

Did Kalrex quit? I took a break from the Forums after I was told that he was thinking of dropping because I hurt his feelings in the Forums. I certainly didn't expect such a mighty player to leave over something like that, but I thought I'd give him time to cool off. I know he was very upset when I won Game 100 even though he really, really, wanted to win it himself. I really should have been more considerate, but even if I hadn't declared victory he would have only been in 3rd place...

Come back, Kalrex! I was enjoying having a nemesis and it's SO much work creating a new one. What if I apologize? What if I even make a really, really, good effort to appearing to be sincere with my apology?

If Kalrex doesn't come back, is there anyone out there who would like to be my new nemesis?
