How about we change the starting season so the North doesn't hit winter before most kingdoms can take their regions?
Since all games are exploratory lets push back winter 2 months, the South is heavily advantaged in this current situation.
In one of my games we are moving on turn 5 and only 2 northern kingdoms have a region.

I have thought about this quite a bit. I would move the seasons back 1 month to have it be more fair. Either that or have all games start on a random month, how cool would that be?

I like 1 month back. So non winter gets 2 hard months letting North build. I would also think it could randomly start in the middle of winter or Summer. Flop N and S once in a while

The start time WAS earlier and the southern kingdoms had to suck it through all of summer. The new mid-summer start date is the adjustment to make the game balanced that was requested by long-time players who had experienced the disadvantage of the early start on the south.
I think you're discounting how hard it is for the South to start with low production.
EDIT - Just saw that you mention the change brought on by exploratory...I suppose if we start to see a pattern of northern advantage I'd support going back to the old dates. But it has to run a while first to see if there's actually something there.

I like the idea of a random start month. Of course, I'm a big fan of randomizing just about everything.

I'm good either way. I've--at least, initially--found the exploratory format actually lessens the impact between northern/southern production in the beginning of game...

+1 to more randomizing as it might also mitigate some of the advantages experienced players have at the start.

I'm not in favor of randomizing, because there are equal odds of a new player getting stuck in a bad schedule and losing their enthusiasm as of a veteran player getting a disadvantage.
