What makes the game fun?

an unrecorded stat i keep for myself is no one has won a single player game when they choose to attack me first.   These kind of things motivate me.

Now there is a hearty gauntlet thrown if I have ever seen one!   Smile   That is the thing I like the most!  The spirit of the fight!  Aaaahhhhhrrrrrggggghhhhhhhh!

We did this once years ago in NC and the game lasted 42 turns until the UN (I think) claimed victory.  I finished 4th with the DW.

I wonder who that UN player was.....

I like the idea of playing a game with no HP's allowed. We'd have to leave the AN out as well. Man, that spunds like fun.

Please do not take any of my comments as a personal insult or as a criticism of the game 'Alamaze', which I very much enjoy. Rather, I hope that my personal insight and unique perspective may, in some way, help make 'Alamaze' more fun, a more successful financial venture, or simply more sustainable as a long-term project. Me too, if you can tolerate a NooB in such an epic scale game.  I would consider it a win if I made it until the end in whatever place........

That would be a really interesting version to try.  
Such a long term game would really change the impact of raising defense and production orders.  I think you might run out of population to recruit from also.

That would be a really interesting version to try.  
Such a long term game would really change the impact of raising defense and production orders.  I think you might run out of population to recruit from also.

Wizards can raise pc population. 

When one of my current games ends I will see if we can start a no-HP game.

This is admittedly more than a bit geeky of me, but the thing that makes Alamaze fun for me is the elegance of the game design. Both the turn-based simultaneous processing aspect (which reminds me of Diplomacy) and the detailed order of operations process for order numbers (which reminds me of some of the better, more complicated wargames I've played) make for great negotiations, strategic complexity, and nuance.

Also love the fantasy setting and diversity of the Kingdoms. LT likes to say that the more variety there is among the Kingdoms, the better, and I tend to agree. It lends itself to a "gotta catch 'em all" sentiment (kind of like playing the different Civs in the Civ series, but even more so) that really increases replayability and fun.

Ok, so here's what makes the game fun for me.

I like challenges and I like overcoming those challenges. When I get my setup, and devise a strategy and start to play out that strategy, I can hardly wait to see my results each turn (like LD said in some other post as he kept hitting the refresh button waiting for his results). I play a lot of chess and I am kind of a math guy, so I love working out the mechanics of an invasion and figuring the odds and seeing how they turn out and what my wily opponents have thought up to torture me.

Echoing other players, I like the diversity of kingdoms (very different from chess). To be fair, I play the balanced kingdoms better than I play the one-trick pony kingdoms. I played the Giant poorly, played the RD mediocre, played a magic kingdom so-so. I really enjoy kingdoms where I can balance various strengths (magic, political, military) so I have done best with Gnome, Darkelf, Ranger. Thus, I really enjoy the kingdoms that have high potential in several areas and I enjoy seeing my little kingdom grow and prosper.

I don't do the diplomacy too well, and am not a big fan of putting together or defending against alliances that come at me early, especially in what I consider to be essentially an individual game. Thus, I have recently only played anonymous games, team games, or warlords.

None of that was useful to the game designer. Ok, so I like diverse kingdoms, I like being able to develop various strengths (so the new concept of several levels of brigade strength seems cool).

Sign me up for a Rex only "Endless game" if Rick allows.
