From Clipper to Java - What it Means for Alamaze
#1
This has been posted on Active Game News, but while not inviting suggestions for revisions, we want the community to understand and be able to discuss and hopefully appreciate what has happened over the past couple months to get Alamaze where it is today.

We feel we have completed the transition of our game platform from Clipper, a db3 (database) oriented language to java, the standard for current day web-based programs.  This is a significant advancement that is unusual in our sophisticated hobby.  Benefits to the players as well as to future development are, without exaggeration, enormous.

Attached please find a document detailing the various aspects and benefits of the migration.

Well done!!

One note: The document attached says that eliminated kingdom PC's change to Human controlled. Is this new? I have found that eliminated PC's revert to Neutral and not Human control.

Yes, new.  I didn't want the PC's to go neutral as that makes it too easy for Usurp or Parlay but didn't want to keep the eliminated kingdom with a presence just to not have the PC's be neutral.  The Humans start in control of all cities, their people have been pushed out to other population centers and take the opportunity to seize control of a PC when a regime collapses.

This is sort of a middle ground between what we did with them going neutral for the past few weeks and keeping them under the eliminated kingdom's control as was done previously.

I think its a good idea! When kingdoms quit its just kind of a quick, easy land grab and this is a good middle ground.

I like it a lot.

Please do not take any of my comments as a personal insult or as a criticism of the game 'Alamaze', which I very much enjoy. Rather, I hope that my personal insight and unique perspective may, in some way, help make 'Alamaze' more fun, a more successful financial venture, or simply more sustainable as a long-term project. I like it as well.

I am seeing from today's results that this issue and not eliminating artifacts is not yet in the code.  I guess I jumped the gun by a couple days.

It's OK, even though I think both are good changes, it may still be better for some to have at least a few days of lead-time on this announcement prior to enactment, anyway. Smile
