Game 171
#1
This is an anonymous Rex game. I didn't find it odd that the Troll and Ancient Ones declared one another allies on turns one and two; I figured they were just letting each other know that they didn't want to fight. More unusual was this on turn nine:

Trade                The Ancient Ones gifted the Troll with a large amount of food and gold.

What benefit does the AN get for these gifts? How was that communicated? Does the Ancient One just have a generous soul? Or is there something there that the rest of us should be worried about?

Please do not take any of my comments as a personal insult or as a criticism of the game 'Alamaze', which I very much enjoy. Rather, I hope that my personal insight and unique perspective may, in some way, help make 'Alamaze' more fun, a more successful financial venture, or simply more sustainable as a long-term project. Anyone who reads this post should feel completely free to ignore, disregard, scorn, implement, improve, dispute, or otherwise comment upon its content.

I despise trading in all anonymous and no diplomacy games, to be honest.

First of all this was not a trade it was a gift. Second you shouldn't draw conclusions without more information then just the message. I am in the game, and I am not the AN or the TR, and just with some simple surveillance I can see why this might take place. You're both good players why are you making newbee accusations.

Who in the world is making a newbie accusation, gkm?

I can't speak for LD, but I'm simply expressing my general detest of trading in anonymous and no diplomacy games... a position which I had understood you shared as of a few weeks ago?

I believe you are discussing trading between teams in a team game. In my eyes that is a very different circumstance and I dont agree with that.

Since this thread is mislabeled. The activities being discussed are not in game 171, I will elaborate. I am in a similar situation in a different anonymous game.

To avoid immediate conflict in my shared region I declared the kingdom sharing my region an Ally on turn one. The other kingdom reciprocated on turn 2. I took the city on turn two and a few turns later I took the region with most of the pop centers falling to me. Now this leaves the other kingdom in a bind. In a full diplomacy game we could work out a deal but in a anon game is this other kingdom forced to live with too few pop centers? I dont want that kingdom to regret declaring me an ally or even worse to declare war on me to get his/her fair share. So I set up a standing order to gift that kingdom resources every turn. This way they receive some compensation from the region and, I hope, they wont look to take my pop centers from me.

If we make this type of transaction taboo in anon games then we will need to limit these games to 10 kingdoms as none will want to take kingdoms in a shared region as it will almost certainly condemn these kingdoms to early war and little chance of winning.

Case in point: I am in an anon game with a shared region. We did not declare allies, have not gifted, but just keep hurting each other. While a little fun, our development is stunted and we are far behind all non-fighting kingdoms. For shared region kingdoms, I guess I am ok with avoiding my current situation. The gifts are likely completely self-interested ?.

As we talk it out, I actually think a ten-player anonymous game with no ally declarations or trades would be really interesting.

EL
WI
DW
AN
WA
DA
GN
DE
SO
BL

WI and BL would be slightly advantaged without natural enemies, unless they could be made natural enemies for purposes of this game.

Just a thought! Would fill more quickly, too.

And lest anyone say forum discussions never change anyone's viewpoints, I think I now agree that ally declarations and trades might be OK for people in an anonymous game who share a region.

I think that is a pretty good and reasonable explanation.  Still impressed with the Alamaze player base that we have had no known Anonymous violation.
