Part of the problem is the games are played too fast. If you slowed down the processing schedule to once a week, that would allow new guys to have more time to ask advice, allow Rick to fix problems and not be under a strict timer, and to have more time to find players for dropped positions.
A large problem is the order entry. It has to be aggravating for a new player to see orders that were perfectly thought out some how typed in bad or auto corrected to a bad order by excel.
I don't like the idea of ponying up cash at the start of the game to make players stay. What might be better is earning "Alamaze" points for making it to turn 10 and 15. Perhaps when you save up enough points you can earn a free setup or free month or preferred position in an Anon game.

I know for a fact that two new players that started game 106 will no longer play Alamaze due to making simple order mistakes with their turns. They got frustrated with their orders not being entered correctly and not only quit that particular game but Alamaze entirely.

Harsh, but true. They're better off staying if spoon-fed games like HW and Middle-Earth.

Maybe we should let them know that even veteran players who play a lot make errors.
I will miss turn 15 reinforcements in game 139 because I botched a movement order. It is frustrating but it is just part of the game. I just tell myself that my opponents make mistakes too.
I sometimes think I should hire an accountant to error check my orders because kinda I suck at it.

I don't want to sound like a broken record here but the order validator will detect some errors in your orders. If Rick ever changes his mind about the decision he made back in Nov, I could probably finish the web order entry/validator in about two weeks. Makes me curious why he hasn't done so in the past six months, perhaps his relative is working on it and he's unable

Woo-hoo! A weaker you means a stronger me (whoever I happen to be in 139)...
IMO to quit a game because the rules are too hard means one of two things - 1. You are unable to comprehend 2. You are unwilling to spend the time to learn (in this case by studying the rules, following them diligently, then making mistakes) ;-)
#2 goes back to the "time value" issue...do you have enough fun playing (even when mistakes are made) vs. spending your entertainment dollars elsewhere...

For me, it is all about how high to set the bar. I don't see myself as messing up an order; I am just thrilled that I did not mess up all 14 orders.
And, since I cannot possibly win against such awesome opponents, everything that goes right is just amazing.
Set the bar low and then don't get upset about orders and screw-ups.
I do get upset at some of the Forum comments, but am practicing not taking those so seriously....
