This did sort of vanish. I used to do a lot of these drafts for players and the HH started doing them. Since he quit, I haven't been asked to do one.

Please do not take any of my comments as a personal insult or as a criticism of the game 'Alamaze', which I very much enjoy. Rather, I hope that my personal insight and unique perspective may, in some way, help make 'Alamaze' more fun, a more successful financial venture, or simply more sustainable as a long-term project. Anyone who reads this post should feel completely free to ignore, disregard, scorn, implement, improve, dispute, or otherwise comment upon its content.

Honestly, all of the kingdoms look equally fun to me - I don't have a favorite in this new cycle yet. I don't have a problem saying that the picking will start at such-and-such a time. I really don't want to be picking last all the time - honestly, I would think a new player would not mind picking towards the end as there are so many interesting ones to play and he'll still have a choice because he's got twice the options.

As a newer player I agree with Dupont's point. It seems fun to play each race to experience it's flavor. If I have played 5 races and he has played 10 then I have more options than he has to still have an enjoyable game.

I do think some races (like druid) tend to always get picked first - often by a veteran. And some races tend to get picked last and more often by a newer player. Do these races need an adjustment?

Some players go out of their way to change their initial choice to give less experienced players a chance. In the team game that is being set up there seems to be a clear consensus in the relative strengths of the teams - Black, White, Red, then Blue. An experienced team jumped on the black team as soon as it was announced but then switched to red to improve the play balance.

As a new player I do feel like a target. I am not complaining. I think it is human nature. You have to attack somebody. Are you going to attack the kung fu master on one side or the drunk guy who can barely walk? By fighting I will get better and eventually learn some kung fu as well. There seems to be a steep learning curve at first then things tend to even out. I assume that most everyone has had a similar experience when they started.

As far as growing the player base, maybe some games designed for newer players would be good. There are probably not enough new players to fill a standard game but at one time there was talk of a confederacy game for new players. Or maybe a team game in which one or two of the team members has to be new. Lord Diamond has been a good resource for me so far. Maybe a mentor program should be established for new players.

Honestly the best learning can be had by team games. I had a 5 vs 5 with JF being one of leaders... I think our team saw the game in a completely different view. I know I still pester him and HH with questions and advice. I would be completely willing to set up another alliance game or a 5vs5 and help coach a team of inexperienced.

I think you find most people want to try all the kingdoms and if you performed poorly with it, you want to try it again and fix what you did wrong.

I agree, I also have learned the most from alliances that I have developed in full-on diplomacy games. I am incredibly excited for the new team game to start. I also pester quite a few of the experienced players with random questions about the game. Getting their opinions paired with my background in gaming/strategy has served me quite well so far.

If this Confluence game cannot be started now then how about a Confederation game? UM, system able to accommodate that variant at this time? Ry Vor, ok with you?

If players are interested I can start a thread with signups starting a predetermined time (Sunday 7pm EST?) to give all a chance to choose their preferred draft position.
-This Khal Drogo, it's said he has a hundred thousand men in his horde

I was actually thinking the same thing, Drogo.  Let's start a queue for a Confederation game.

This will require a draft (Lord Diamond?).  Each of six players controls two kingdoms.  LD can post the draft sequence, whether it is standard snake or some modification. See new sign-up thread.
