If I may offer a suggestion, Pine Needle. The Demon Princes under my command likely won't place much value in apologies. But one option that you have, which you have not chosen to exercise, as of yet, is to bait the Demon Princes, by making them aware of other targets - such as Cimmerian population centers. After all, I don't know where any of their population centers are, as I can't see that far North, yet. Demon Princes would be intimately familiar with the value of temptation. It might (or might not) succeed in causing the Demon Princes to shift their gaze, even if only temporarily.

I have no reason to believe that DuPont isn't going to take a village with his 1st CI group from me in the coming turn, one that I took from you, this turn. Demon Princes would likely view apologies as a sign of weakness. Selling out the other guy, though, that's right down the Demon Princes' alley.

I haven't even filled my turn orders out for the next turn, yet, and they are due tomorrow. I may roll some dice, to determine what my turn orders shall be.

The fable of the pixie, the crow and the berry patch... suffice it to say the crow believed the pixie when they said they were happy the crow was at the berry patch in Nyvaria, instead of the bigger, juicier, better berry patches at FV and EY.

Now sleep tight little pixies, and Lady Pole will tell you another bedtime story tomorrow.

Turn #8
(Continued)

Turn results for Turn #8 arrived in my e-mail in-box just a few short minutes ago. I have only just begun to browse it, and haven't even looked at the majority of it, yet. Already, though, a few nuggets of interest stand out to my eyes.

1. Player DuPont attacked a village that my kingdom had only recently seized control of from the Fairy Folk, for their sin of provoking a war against my realm. My instinct had informed me that DuPont would not allow for discretion to be the better part of valor, and that he would send a message to me. Thus, the village fell to his 1st CI military group. DuPont is not inclined to avoid war. Conflict has a certain familiarity to it.

2. The Fairy Folk have now taken to speaking in fables. This, of course, adds entertainment value to the forum thread, but it also underscores how Alamaze players routinely miss opportunities that appear. Demon Princes cannot be appealed to by resort to fables. It would probably make more sense to sacrifice the location of Cimmerian population centers, that to speak of tomorrow. From the perspective of Demon Princes, you are not promised tomorrow, and also, monsters tend to come in the night. If you have two enemies at war with you early in the game, and one enemy is making an attempt to communicate with you but the other one is not, there's at least one opportunity (and possibly more) manifesting itself.

3. As a general matter, and not just with regard to this game or to the Fairy Folk player, specifically, if I had to come up with a descriptive term that I feel really describes Alamaze, it would be The Game of Missed Opportunities. And I certainly count myself in that number. I routinely see other players blunder, and I, myself, routinely blunder. Big blunders, little blunders.

4. To be certain, the Cimmerians have just ignited a war with the Demon Princes. Currently, a 3-way war exists between the Cimmerians, the Fairy Folk, and the Demon Princes.

5. Demon Princes are familiar with the concept of sacrifice. Thus, why not sacrifice any and all information about the Demon Princes, their population centers, their military group locations, etc.? The Demon Princes are definitely going to focus on someone. The only real question is, who? Sure, as a player, I can simultaneously focus upon multiple different kingdoms and players. The more that I focus upon the Cimmerians, the better off the Fairy Folk are likely to be. There are never any guarantees, of course, but there are probabilities and likelihoods and possibilities.

6. In games, much as in real life, irony reigns. Had the Fairy Folk player not sent an emissary to usurp the village of Neptune, then my Demon Princes wouldn't have retaliated. To provoke Hell's wrath comes with a price tag attached. But now, a different story begins to unfold, even as the first story continues unfolding. As a player, winning and losing mean nothing to me. Rather, it's the fun that I pursue. Entertainment can be wielded like a sword, at times. I will invariably tend to focus more upon ensuring that certain other kingdoms don't win or can't win than I am ever likely to focus upon actually trying to win by harvesting numbers in the game's programmed code.

7. 1st CI group has now disappeared from my map. 3rd CI group, however, is currently located at area QW, where the Demon Princes village of Lankhmar is located. It has been met there by the arrival of 1st DE group.

8. To communicate with Demon Princes, one must learn to speak their "language." Demon Princes don't have good sides, so you can't get on their good side. But that's not the same thing as learning to communicate more effectively with them.

I hope that everyone has a really nice Thanksgiving!

Turn #8 - Composition of the Cimmerians 1st CI Group

Assault by the 1st Cimmerians army on the Demon Princes village of Longleaf Market, located in Nyvaria:
Cimmerians                          Village of Longleaf Market (Area PU)

                                      Commanders
                    Warlord Korus                  Newcomer Pale Horseman
                    Lord Commander Son of Krull
                    Commander Kan Dorisian

                                        Wizards
                            None                        None

                                        Brigades
                    5 Cimmerians Veteran          1,035 Volunteers
                    1 Mammoths Veteran
                    1 Vikings Veteran
                    2 Paladins Regular

                                      Combat Factors
                      Renowned Leaders              Confident Morale
                      Light Attrition

                                    Tactical Selection
Standard Battle Plan              Defend Your Family

As wars unfold, it is my intention to share some insight into how events unfold. It is said that knowledge is power, and one quint-essential function of information is to increase knowledge, which in turn can result in an increase in power, in a roundabout way.

So, as DuPont proceeds apace with his plotting and his scheming, Hell intends to shed a little bit of light on various things. How strong is DuPont's Cimmerians, compared to your own kingdom, for example? Will DuPont's kingdom perform better or worse, is his kingdom's assets are tracked along the way of his journey through this particular epoch of Alamaze.

This is but one example of how information warfare can be waged against experienced players of Alamaze by less experienced individuals. Experienced wargamers, by their very nature, tend to always be on the lookout for advantage in every form that it takes. Thus, even if the tides of war turn against my kingdom, your own kingdom will be better armed with knowledge that might yet prove to be of some value to you, should your kingdom find itself next on DuPont's menu of feast.

I can't look at the troop brigade numbers and just do the math. However, numerous experienced players of Alamaze can. Knowing what DuPont's forces are comprised of allows other players in this game to obtain a clearer picture of the Cimmerians' actual strength. Plus, too, knowing where DuPont's forces are on any given turn means that you also know where they are not. Revealing DuPont's forces' size and location induces an element of increased vulnerability to DuPont's kingdom. After all, there's more players in this game of Alamaze than just he or I or the Fairy Folk. If at any point the Cimmerians begin to look weak enough and vulnerable enough, then that can prove to be a temptation, of sorts, to at least some other players in this game.

The Region of Nyvaria
Turn #8
(As Seen Through The Eyes Of The Demon Princes Player)

As of Turn #8, no less than 8 of the population centers in Nyvaria have been successfully tracked down by the Demon Princes. This probably only leaves one or two population centers in Nyvaria unaccounted for.

The Kingdom Set-Up Report for the Fairy Folks states: Secretive: The kingdom begins with a hidden capital and an additional level 4 agent. On turn 0, the capital will be given a Glyph of Concealment.

So, a hidden capital (which, at game start, would be a town), and a Glyph of Concealment (which would be a waste on an already hidden population center, right?). So, we're talking two "hidden" population centers, correct? or am I missing something about this?

Distance to move is irrelevant to Demon Prince characters. Thus, learning/knowing the location of population centers lies at the very core of exploiting and maximizing the central advantage(s) that the Demon Prince characters confer.

Oops! I misread it, didn't I? The Glyph is what will make the Fairy Folk starting capital to be hidden. Thus, one hidden population center in Nyvaria, not two.

As my friends the Ents, say, don't be hasty. Also, say hi to my other friends the Elves. Also, also, thanks for the excellent mapping in Nyvaria.

And I imagine your odiousness will not delite in a berry pie, so I will not sent one, but have a happy Evilday.

This 3 way love triangle is interesting. I almost look forward to these updates than my actual turn.

Yet another example of missed opportunity.

I will try to remember to say hi to your friends, the Elves, though. I count the elves as allies.
