Devout trait needs tweaking as do the wizard levels of the kingdoms you mentioned or tweak how we recruit companions

I am proud of the contributions Frost Lord, Diamond, the draft volunteers such as Head Honcho make.  And the mentoring that is so critical by JF, Hawk and others.  When players love the game, its what keeps me going.  (Although not as fast as in the past Confused . )

In the next couple weeks, I hope to turn my attention to the next release, but I would not expect anything official until a target of Jan 1.

The first post in this thread has a new 'The Halls of Valhalla' file to reflect a new Duel game.

Please do not take any of my comments as a personal insult or as a criticism of the game 'Alamaze', which I very much enjoy. Rather, I hope that my personal insight and unique perspective may, in some way, help make 'Alamaze' more fun, a more successful financial venture, or simply more sustainable as a long-term project. Anyone who reads this post should feel completely free to ignore, disregard, scorn, implement, improve, dispute, or otherwise comment upon its content.

Rick I dislike the negative effects with Devout. Devout kingdoms have -2 to maximum trainable agent level and +1,000 to magic research cost (penalties). Those angels do not make up for the cost on magic research when you are already a crap mage. And agents are needed to counter wizards.

Then tell me which 565 you would rather have.

Companions (Order #565):
Centaurs CE 4,000 8,000 5 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Forest terrain and requires General and 3 brigades
Hill Giants HI 10,000 12,000 3 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Mountains terrain and requires Marshal and 1 Elite brigade
Mammoths MA 10,000 12,000 3 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Plains terrain and requires Marshal and 1 Elite brigade
Orcs OR 4,000 6,000 10 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Plains, Forest, Mountains, Marsh terrain and requires Captain and 3 brigades
Rohirrim RO 4,000 8,000 5 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Plains terrain and requires General and 1 Veteran brigade
Scorpions SC 4,000 8,000 3 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Desert terrain and requires General and 1 Elite brigade
Trolls TR 10,000 12,000 3 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Forest, Mountains terrain and requires Marshal and 1 Veteran brigade

Or

Companions (Order #565):
Apes AP 4,000 4,000 10 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Forest terrain and requires Captain and 3 brigades
Hill Giants HI 10,000 12,000 3 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Mountains terrain and requires Marshal and 1 Elite brigade
Wildlings WL 4,000 6,000 10 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Plains, Forest, Mountains terrain and requires Captain and 3 brigades
Zealots ZE 4,000 4,000 10 Recruit in wild (no pop center) in Plains, Forest, Mountains, Desert terrain and requires Captain and 1 Veteran brigade

One is a military kingdom, the other is a mage kingdom.

Well, I've been doing this for a while.  Let me know of another game with 10 or so positions that have less spread in position rankings between first and last.

You can't play the Amazons like the Warlock.  This is intended to be a major part of the attraction.  We're not trying to make them all similar.

Players need to study the traits.  Theirs, and their opponents.  There have been some massacres at the hands of the Amazons in the plains.  The Dwarves have scared off the Red Dragons when they have veteran war machines.

I do think that both the Sacred Order and Black Dragons need something done for them. The Sacred Order just dropped or were eliminated on turn 5 of my game and they were being played by a very skilled player.

Perhaps they need the Dynasty trait? That might be enough to give them the early buffer they need.

Interesting possibility and not hard to do: dynasty with Sacred Order.  I still think players just are still adapting to 3rd Cycle.  The 2nd Cycle staples may not work here.  I don't know which skilled player, but as I posted elsewhere, the Sacred Order seems to be taken frequently by brand new players, against all advice, so I don't know if Valhalla can reflect that.

I want our top players to take Sacred Order, or Black Dragons.

I think The Wise One qualifies.

Please consider the Black Dragon as well. R5 is a harsh starting position.
