Yeah, there is definitely something going on with the credentials check. Keeps taking me several tries to log in.
Anyway, I can't argue with your points, Senior Tactician. They are all valid. All I can tell you is that there are half a dozen ways to do the selection and we have this same debate almost every year. For instance, Rick favors total status points, you favor total points, but both of these penalize good players who play fewer games. The goal was to get the best player for the best kingdom for each of the kingdoms (so we ended up with the system we have). It is not any more right than any other method, but it does level the playing field for busier people. Like I said, I have no dog in this race, so I am not favoring any one system because of the outcome. Let's face it, Painted Man is on top of Maelstrom no matter how we slice it. Jumpingfist (Draugr) and I used to be on top under the previous game system (but I seriously suck at Maelstrom for some reason).
So, we can start the debate over, but your system means the best players by your definition (most points) get to pick all of the good kingdoms, giving them a further advantage. The biggest challenge in my mind is that under Maelstrom, kingdoms can start anywhere (in the past, someone who played the Elf and won could choose them and their region came with the kingdom so no risk of a bad region for that kingdom). Now, I suppose the AT or the PI with a bad draw could get a land-locked region or the Red could get a watery region. So, there is some merit to changing things up under Maelstrom.
I do not have the patience to sort thru a whole new way of picking the champions, so if folks don't want to use the system we have used, then others can hash this out. I am not upset or offended, just really have had this debate every year for several years now. I will say that your decision to play depending on how this debate goes is sort of like saying you will take your ball and go home. There are a lot of players with different views on this, and no one view is the only right one. So, at this point, I have listed how it would work under the current system (with a good correction catch from PT), and will now step out of the debate.
Good gaming.
