Beware of Elves in Forests!
#1
Here are some choice EL battle reports from Game 166.  The third battle was immediately after a Summon Death spell wiped out three brigades and lowered the group's morale by 15%.

As the two forces drew closer, the Trolls were intimidated by the organized Elven force
that lowered the Troll fighting ability before the battle. As the attack placed the groups
face to face, the Elven leaders bolstered their troops against the lumbering Trolls which
raised the Elven fighting ability before the battle. Just before dawn the Troll division
advanced upon the Elven small army commanded by Marshal Grisizan. Among the Troll troops
were brigades of Orcs, which now leaped ahead to the first ranks! Knowing that their ruler
had declared the Elven to be hostile to their nation, the Troll troops were noticably
energized and had their morale raised as they prepared to meet their declared enemy! Due
to the fact that their nation has made the Troll known as hostile to their kingdom, the
Elven troops were invigorated and had their morale raised as they prepared to meet their
declared enemy! As the most significant group of their history, the troops are visibly
emboldened by being under the first Elven colors!

                                       - Archers -

As the attackers advanced through the forest the first missiles sang out. The Troll
skilled archers inflicted little or no damage to their opponents lines. The Elven skilled
archers inflicted minor damage to their opponents lines.

                                        - Magic -

The Troll wizard Annatar dismounted past the defensive misslers on the battlefield. The
Troll Annatar (Adept) was not a factor in the battle. The Elven wizards Swagmore and
Farview dismounted past the defensive misslers on the battlefield. The Elven Power-3
wizard Swagmore cast a series of minor assaults: some lighting, fire, and sonic blasts
which disrupted the opposing troops. The Elven Power-3 wizard Swagmore threw back his hood
and gestured in an animated fashion. While invisible, his sorcery sent lethal sonic blasts
directly into enemy formations with impressive effect. The Elven Farview (Power-1) was not
a factor in the battle. To the satisfaction of their foes, the trolls seemed greater
affected by the magical attacks cast against them than was expected. The Troll enlightened
mages dealt out little or no damage to their foes as the Elven emphatic mages caused light
     losses to the Troll ranks.

                                       - Cavalry -

Bolting ahead to meet the cavalry of their foes were the Troll force and the Elven
cavalry. The Troll cavalry dealt out little or no damage to the Elven lines. As the Elven
cavalry imposed light damage to the Troll ranks.

                                      - Conclusion -

Troll casualties had now exceeded acceptable levels in the judgement of General Fineghal
so he ordered the retreat be sounded. The Troll leaders did a remarkable job in exiting
the field with minimal additional casualties. Troll casualties were put at 61%. Troll
leader General Lambda was slain in battle. Troll Adept Annatar was slain in battle. Losses
suffered in the effort and depression of defeat have greatly reduced the Troll morale.
Elven casualties were put at 0%. All Elven leaders survived the battle. All the Elven
wizards survived the fray. The indisputable nature of the Elven force's victory has
     greatly increased morale.

were brigades of Orcs, which now raced to the front lines! Being surprised by the sudden
onset of battle, the defender's leaders were unorganized in issuing orders and the troops
were greatly demoralized that diminished their defensive capabilities. Knowing that their
ruler had declared the Troll to be hostile to their nation, the Elven troops were

The Elven wizards Swagmore, Farview, and Elude dismounted past the defensive misslers on
the battlefield. The Elven Power-6 wizard Swagmore cast a series of minor assaults: some
lighting, fire, and sonic blasts which disrupted the opposing troops. The 1st Elven
Power-6 wizard Swagmore slowly spoke in an arcane language, gestures building to a
crescendo. With a horrible shout, a black ray shot forth from his hand and instantly
struck dead one of the opposing heroes, much to the dismay of the enemy! The Elven Power-5
wizard Farview cast a series of minor assaults: some lighting, fire, and sonic blasts
which disrupted the opposing troops. The Elven Power-3 wizard Elude cast a series of minor
assaults: some lighting, fire, and sonic blasts which disrupted the opposing troops. To
the satisfaction of their foes, the trolls seemed greater affected by the magical attacks
cast against them than was expected. The Troll wizard Ashtonz dismounted past the
defensive misslers on the battlefield. The Troll Power-4 wizard Ashtonz cast a series of
minor assaults: some lighting, fire, and sonic blasts which disrupted the opposing troops.
The Elven enlightened mages dealt out minor damage to their foes as the Troll emphatic
mages caused little or no losses to the Elven ranks.

greater losses during their withdrawal. The Troll leaders exited the field with a
signficant amount of casualties. Elven casualties were put at 1%. All Elven leaders
survived the battle. All the Elven wizards survived the fray. The Elven troops are eager
for more victories: morale is up! Troll casualties were put at 71%. Troll leader General I
Onyx was slain in battle. Troll leader Captain II Garsh was slain in battle. All the Troll

                                                    Low Morale
                                     Tactical Selection
                     Determined Attack              Surprised

At the first light of dawn, the 1st Elven army group advanced with grim resolution toward
the defensive position of the 1st Witchlord full army led by General Prosperity. Among the
Witchlord troops were brigades of Skeletons and Monsters, which now raced to the front
lines! Being surprised by the sudden onset of battle, the defender's leaders were
unorganized in issuing orders and the troops were greatly demoralized that diminished
their defensive capabilities. Knowing that their liege had declared the Witchlord to be an
enemy of their nation, the Elven forces were noticably energized and benefited from
increased morale as they prepared to fight their declared enemy! Aware of the political
situation that had declared the Elven to be treated as an enemy of their nation, the
Witchlord troops were clearly anxious for battle and had their morale raised as they
prepared to battle their declared enemy! As the most important group of their people, the
troops are visibly heartened by the presence of the first Elven's banner! As the most
significant group of their kingdom, the forces are clearly emboldened by being under the
first Witchlord's colors! As the attackers advanced through the dense forest, the first
     missles sang out.

                                       - Archers -

The Elven deadly accurate longbowmen and the black-hooded bowmen of the Witchlord force
initiated their attack. The Elven lines caused devastating losses upon the Witchlord
forces in response, the Witchlord dealt out light damage to their enemy.

                                        - Magic -

Elven wizards dismounted just beyond the range of defending bowmen and began an
incomprehensible incantation. Power-8 wizard Elude incanted in a low forceful tone, in
rapid succession were cast many minor phantasms and magical bolts into the heart of the
enemy force. Power-6 wizard Illumemont slowly spoke in an arcane language, gestures
building to a crescendo, in rapid succession were cast many killing illusions and waves of
deadly cold into the ranks of the enemy. Power-4 wizard Moonshade glowered intently and
issued indecipherable utterances, in rapid succession were cast many minor phantasms and
magical bolts into the ranks of the enemy. Power-4 wizard Moonshade incanted in a low
forceful tone. His magic caused illusionary sounds and sights to confuse his foes and
confound their commanders: Chaos reigned and they will be forced to fight longer than they
otherwise anticipated. Witchlord wizards dismounted just past where the defensive missles
were falling and began an animated spell. Power-7 wizard Aquilius while seemingly detached
from all else, seemed to draw within himself and began to incant, with chilling ease he
fired many volleys of minor phantasms and magical bolts into the ranks of the enemy. The
Witchlord Gor (Power-1) was not a factor in the battle. The Witchlord Lujka (Power-1) was
not a factor in the battle. The Elven forces inflicted appreciable casualties upon the
Witchlord ranks as the Witchlord claimed minor losses to their enemy.

                                       - Cavalry -

Bolting ahead to meet the cavalry of their foes were both the Elven horsemen and the
Witchlord horsemen. The Elven lines inflicted heavy losses upon the Witchlord lines while
the Witchlord dealt out minor casualties to their foes.

                                      - Conclusion -

At this moment in the struggle, losses suffered by the 1st Witchlord had gone beyond the
original threshold planned. As a withdrawal was attempted, the field commanders of the 1st
Witchlord assigned the duties of relaying withdrawal commands were dismayed as the effects
of the enemy's mesmerizing magic prevented their comrades from retreating as ordered. To
their credit, the 1st Witchlord forces continued to fight as trained. Sadly, as the omens
of the day foretold, the Witchlord group could not extricate themselves from the dire
moment: they were destroyed. Witchlord casualties were put at 100%. The group was
destroyed! Elven casualties were put at 2%. All Elven leaders survived the battle. All the
Elven wizards survived the fray. The troops are eager for further glory: morale is up! For
defeating the 1st Witchlord, the 1st Elven has acquired Palantir Ambalar as spoils of war!

As the attack placed the groups face to face, the Elven leaders bolstered their troops
against the lumbering Trolls which raised the Elven fighting ability before the battle. As
the two forces drew closer, the Trolls were intimidated by the organized Elven force that
lowered the Troll fighting ability before the battle. Just before dawn the Elven army
group advanced upon the Troll army group commanded by General Onyx. Among the Troll troops
were brigades of Orcs, which now raced to the front lines! Being surprised by the sudden
onset of battle, the defender's leaders were unorganized in issuing orders and the troops
were greatly demoralized that diminished their defensive capabilities. Knowing that their
ruler had declared the Troll to be hostile to their nation, the Elven troops were
noticably energized and had their morale raised as they prepared to meet their declared
enemy! Due to the fact that their nation has made the Elven known as hostile to their
kingdom, the Troll troops were invigorated and had their morale raised as they prepared to
meet their declared enemy! As the most important group of their people, the fighters are
visibly bolstered by the presence of the first Elven banner! As the most significant group
of their history, the troops are visibly emboldened by being under the first Troll colors!

                                       - Archers -

As the attackers advanced through the forest the first missiles sang out. The Elven
skilled archers inflicted light damage to their opponents lines. The Troll skilled archers
inflicted little or no damage to their opponents lines.

                                        - Magic -

                                       - Cavalry -

Bolting ahead to meet the cavalry of their foes were the Elven force and the Troll
cavalry. The Elven cavalry dealt out light damage to the Troll lines. As the Troll cavalry
imposed little or no damage to the Elven ranks.

                                      - Conclusion -

Troll casualties had now exceeded acceptable levels in the judgement of General Onyx so he
ordered the retreat be sounded. Being surprised by the battle, the defenders suffered
greater losses during their withdrawal.
All the Troll
wizards survived the fray. The toll of battle has reduced the Troll group's morale.

The Darkelven wizards Stanz, Algor, and Kydeata dismounted past the defensive misslers on
the battlefield. The Darkelven Power-3 wizard Stanz cast a series of minor assaults: some
lighting, fire, and sonic blasts which disrupted the opposing troops. The Darkelven
Power-3 wizard Stanz glowered intently and issued indecipherable utterances. A faintly
visible blue shimmering began to surround the troops and noticeably lessened the
effectiveness of the arrows of the defenders. The Darkelven Power-2 wizard Algor glowered
intently and issued indecipherable utterances. A faintly visible blue shimmering began to
surround the troops and noticeably lessened the effectiveness of the arrows of the
defenders. The Darkelven Power-2 wizard Kydeata glowered intently and issued
indecipherable utterances. A faintly visible blue shimmering began to surround the troops
and noticeably lessened the effectiveness of the arrows of the defenders. Alarming to
their foes, the dwarves seemed less affected by the magical attacks cast against them than
was expected. The Dwarven wizards Rhythamun and Vanimer dismounted past the defensive
misslers on the battlefield. The Dwarven Power-1 Wizard Rhythamun threw back his hood and
gestured in an animated fashion. He then created a powerful warding, which would protect
the heroes and wizards of his force from the black magics of any opposing spellcasters.
The Dwarven Power-1 Wizard Vanimer threw back his hood and gestured in an animated
fashion. He then created a powerful warding, which would protect the heroes and wizards of
his force from the black magics of any opposing spellcasters. The Darkelven enlightened
mages dealt out little or no damage to their foes as the Dwarven emphatic mages caused
little or no losses to the Darkelven ranks.

                                       - Artifact -

Dwarven Marshal Cinaris displayed the Axe of Farin for all to see, his troops thus
encouraged multiplied their efforts and the enemy's leaders quaked as the magical axe slew
enemy forces. By raising the Golden Spear of Lerix, Dwarven Marshal Cinaris infused his
troops with boldness while the Darkelven leaders grew concerned as the magical spear slew
     enemy forces.

                                       - Cavalry -

Bolting ahead to meet the cavalry of their foes were the Darkelven force and the Dwarven

Dwarven cavalry imposed little or no damage to the Darkelven ranks.

                                       - Infantry -

Stalwart infantry now charged ahead. Darkelven forces inflicted considerable damage while
     Dwarven troops dealt light damage.

                                      - Conclusion -

Dwarven casualties had now exceeded acceptable levels in the judgement of Marshal Cinaris
so he ordered the retreat be sounded. The Dwarven leaders were able to muster their forces
and exitied the field with only a few additional casualties. Darkelven casualties were put
at 24%. Darkelven leader Captain II Beowulf was slain in battle. Darkelven Wizard Power-2
Kydeata was slain in battle. The Darkelven troops are eager for more victories: morale is
up! Dwarven casualties were put at 82%. Dwarven leader Marshal I Cinaris was slain in
battle. Dwarven leader General I Abacus was slain in battle. Dwarven leader Captain
Axebreaker was slain in battle. Dwarven Wizard Power-1 Rhythamun was slain in battle.
Losses suffered in the effort and depression of defeat have greatly reduced the Dwarven
     morale.

                                      - Conclusion -

Dwarven casualties were put at 100%. All troops perished! Darkelven casualties were put at
1%. All Darkelven leaders survived the battle. A new leader, Captain Feist has emerged as
a courageous leader of much promise. All the Darkelven wizards survived the fray. The
indisputable nature of the Darkelven force's victory has greatly increased morale.

What bothered me most about this was that his P1 went invisible and robbed me of the three artifacts in the group.  I considered this cheating as the items were not mage in origin and should have been scattered after the battle.

If i see things correctly,  the mage goes invisible and then the battle is fought.  Once the army is destroyed, the artifacts should be left on the battlefield for the victors to recover.

Could a dispel magic have stopped this from happening?

Congrats to HH for victory in this one.

I would agree it is kind of cheesy but has been published on the forum that an invisible Mage can protect the artifacts of a group if all the troops die as would a wraith. To combat this you would need to use a kill spell on the invisible Mage and have dispelled any and all protect spells.

JF is correct. I think you could look at it as the invisible wizard being "in the know" and when the battle goes south, the wizard runs around collecting the valuables before bugging out.

Perhaps...

But doesn't the invisible wizard spell go off BEFORE group engagement orders?

If this is the case, then I would expect those artifacts to be long gone before the first missiles fly.

If they are used in the battle then I think they are fair game.

A guarded attack could be argued differently.

I'd be a little angry if I was the DW in that case. Does not make sense to me. 2 army groups head to head. DW has 2 weapon artifacts and gets wiped out. DA only has 1% losses....

Seems right to me.   The DA had better quality brigades and more of them.   the wizard superiority likely more than made up for the artifact bonuses.  But the real killer here was the DA had 10 kingdom brigades with a +35% bonus vs the DW having only 4 kingdom brigades.   The DW also had 4 brigades of recruits which fight at -25% to vets.   The DA kingdom brigades also deal a good chunk of there damage early in the archery phase before the DW infantry gets a chance to fight at there stength in hand to hand.

DA had 24% losses in the first battle. Agree with JF, seems about right.

I love how we will have to seriously take our army composition and terrain into account moving forward. What fantasy general would willingly lead his Dwarves into the marsh to fight Darkelves? In return, it would be a foolish Darkelf general who intentionally grappled with Dwarves in their mountains! Future Dwarves with the conquest of the Eastern Steppes in mind may find themselves seeking out mercenary brigades of Trolls or Eastern Steppes Swamp Runners (you can use that, Rick) to fill out their forces. Darkelves gazing greedily upon the Dwarven peaks may first attract Ogres or hardy Talking Mountains Slingers before venturing north.

Please do not take any of my comments as a personal insult or as a criticism of the game 'Alamaze', which I very much enjoy. Rather, I hope that my personal insight and unique perspective may, in some way, help make 'Alamaze' more fun, a more successful financial venture, or simply more sustainable as a long-term project.
